В указанное время корабли делились по рангам следующим образом: I ранг – корабли от 76 до 120 орудий; II ранг – от 60 до 74 орудий; III ранг – от 50 до 60 орудий; IV ранг – от 40 до 50 орудий; V и VI образовывали фрегаты и корветы, а шлюпы и брандеры шли вне рангового деления.

Реально «война из-за уха Дженкинса» началась в 1739 году с нападения адмирала Вернона на Порто-Белло в Вест-Индии. В 1741 году в Европе началась Война за австрийское наследство, в которую в 1744 году вступила Франция. По сути, все эти конфликты были одной большой мировой войной, куда постепенно втягивались новые участники.
