 ‘You see, I couldn’t tell: it was the sort of shock that upsets you in a dream. You either wake up or else everything goes black. That was what happened to me. Then I was in a big dark-walled room, panelled, I think, like the other, and a number of people, and I was evidently —’

‘Standing your trial, I suppose, George.’

‘Goodness! yes, Mary, I was; but did you dream that too? How very odd!’

‘No, no; I didn’t get enough sleep for that. Go on, George, and I will tell you afterwards.’

‘Yes; well, I was being tried, for my life, I’ve no doubt, from the state I was in. I had no one speaking for me, and somewhere there was a most fearful fellow – on the bench; I should have said, only that he seemed to be pitching into me most unfairly, and twisting everything I said, and asking most abominable questions.’

‘What about (о

‘Why, dates when I was at particular places (ну, какого числа я был в определенных местах; date – дата, число), and letters I was supposed to have written (и о письмах, которые я предположительно написал), and why I had destroyed some papers (и почему я уничтожил некие бумаги); and I recollect his laughing at answers I made in a way that quite daunted me (и я помню, как он смеялся над моими ответами так, что это положительно пугало меня; to daunt – устрашать; приводить в уныние). ‘Oh, against me; he saw to that (о, не в мою пользу: «против меня», он об этом позаботился). Yes; I’ve no doubt it was an execution for high treason (да; я не сомневаюсь: «не имею сомнений», что это была казнь за государственную измену; execution – выполнение; /смертная/ казнь; high treason – государственная измена). I know I was laid on straw and jolted along most wretchedly (я знаю, что меня положили на солому и повезли по жутким ухабам; to jolt – двигаться подпрыгивая, трястись /по неровной дороге/; wretchedly – ужасный, отчаянный; wretched – бедный, несчастный), and then had to go up some steps (и мне пришлось подняться по ступенькам), and some one was holding my arm (и кто-то держал мою руку), and I remember seeing a bit of a ladder and hearing a sound of a lot of people (и я помню, что я видел только часть лестницы и слышал звук множества людей; bit – кусочек; частица, небольшое количество; a bit of smth. – немного чего-либо). I really don’t think I could bear now to go into a crowd of people and hear the noise they make talking (мне теперь страшно и представить, что я окажусь в толпе и услышу, как они шумят: «я в самом деле не думаю, что я мог бы вынести теперь зайти в толпу людей и услышать тот шум, который они производят, разговаривая»). ‘I know what you are going to ask (я знаю, что ты собираешься спросить). I suppose this is an instance of a kind of thought-reading (я полагаю, это пример чего-то вроде чтения мыслей).
