There is something very strange and unaccountable about a tow-line (в буксирном канате есть что-то очень странное и необъяснимое). You roll it up with as much patience and care as you would take to fold up a new pair of trousers (вы сматываете его с такими терпением и осторожностью, какие бы приложили, чтобы сложить новую пару брюк), and five minutes afterwards, when you pick it up (а пять минут спустя, когда вы поднимаете его), it is one ghastly, soul-revolting tangle (он является одним ужасным, отвратительным спутанным клубком; soul-revolting — возмущающий душу).

He could not in conscience — not even George's conscience — object, though he did suggest that, perhaps, it would be better for him to stop in the boat, and get tea ready, while Harris and I towed, because getting tea was such a worrying work, and Harris and I looked tired. The only reply we made to this, however, was to pass him over the tow-line, and he took it, and stepped out.

I do not wish to be insulting, but I firmly believe that if you took an average tow-line (я

That is my opinion of tow-lines in general (таково мое мнение о бечеве вообще). Of course, there may be honourable exceptions (конечно, могут быть почтенные исключения); I do not say that there are not (я не говорю, что их нет). There may be tow-lines that are a credit to their profession (могут быть буксирные канаты, которые делают честь своей профессии) — conscientious, respectable tow-lines (добросовестные, достойные уважения канаты) — tow-lines that do not imagine they are crochet-work (которые не воображают, что они вязальные нитки; crochet — вязание крючком), and try to knit themselves up into antimacassars the instant they are left to themselves (и не пытаются превратиться в салфеточки в /тот же/ момент, как их предоставят самим себе; to knit up — связывать, соединять). I say there may be such tow-lines (говорю же, могут быть подобные канаты); I sincerely hope there are (я искренне надеюсь, что они есть). But I have not met with them (но я с ними не встречался; to meet — встречать).

It is always the same, and the same sort of thing always goes on in connection with it (всегда одно и то же, и то же самое всегда происходит в связи с этим). The man on the bank, who is trying to disentangle it (человек на берегу, который пытается распутать ее), thinks all the fault lies with the man who rolled it up (думает, что вся вина лежит на том, кто смотал ее); and when a man up the river thinks a thing, he says it (а когда человек на реке что-нибудь думает, он говорит это /прямо/).

On the other hand, the man who wound it up (с другой стороны, человек, который смотал ее) thinks the whole cause of the muddle rests with the man who is trying to unwind it (думает, что вся причина = вина путаницы/неразберихи лежит на том, кто пытается распутать ее; to rest with — возлагать ответственность).

"It was all right when you took it (она была в порядке, когда ты взял ее)!" he exclaims indignantly (восклицает он негодующе). "Why don't you think what you are doing (почему ты не думаешь /о том/, что делаешь)? You go about things in such a slap-dash style (ты приступаешь к работе в такой небрежной манере = делаешь все кое-как). You'd get a scaffolding pole entangled, you would (ты бы и строительную балку запутал; scaffolding pole — стойка строительных лесов; scaffold — леса, подмостки; эшафот)!"
