Hastening away from the shadows of the formidable pile (торопясь выйти из теней огромного строения; formidable — огромный, внушительный; pile — куча, груда; огромное здание) I made for the first crossroad (я направился к первому же перекрестку; to make for — направляться, следовать куда-либо), intending to strike the central turnpike as quickly as possible (намереваясь выйти к центральной дороге как можно быстрее; to strike — ударять; достигать; turnpike — дорожная застава; магистраль). There were low rambling buildings of concrete barred with heavy impassable doors (там

The buildings I had been hammering at in the early morning (постройки,

These brothers, with their wives and children (эти братья с их женами и детьми), occupied three similar houses on this farm (занимали три похожих дома на этой ферме; similar — похожий, сходный).
