treasure ['treZq], wondrous ['wAndrqs], mourning ['mO: nIN]
"Helium," he said, "rightly boasts the most beautiful women of Barsoom, and of all her treasures the wondrous daughter of Mors Kajak, Dejah Thoris, is the most exquisite flower.
"Why," he added, "the people really worship the ground she walks upon and since her loss on that ill-starred expedition all Helium has been draped in mourning.
"That our ruler should have attacked the disabled fleet as it was returning to Helium was but another of his awful blunders which I fear will sooner or later compel Zodanga to elevate a wiser man to his place."
"Even now, though our victorious armies are surrounding Helium (даже теперь, хотя наши победоносные войска окружают Гелиум), the people of Zodanga are voicing their displeasure (население Зоданги выражает свое неудовольствие), for the war is not a popular one (так как война эта
"And what, think you, may have been the fate of the princess, Dejah Thoris (а какова, ты думаешь, может быть судьба принцессы Дежи Торис)?" I asked as casually as possible (спросил я как можно небрежнее; casual — случайный, небрежный).
victorious [vIk'tO: rIqs], voice [vOIs], plight [plaIt]
"Even now, though our victorious armies are surrounding Helium, the people of Zodanga are voicing their displeasure, for the war is not a popular one, since it is not based on right or justice. Our forces took advantage of the absence of the principal fleet of Helium on their search for the princess, and so we have been able easily to reduce the city to a sorry plight. It is said she will fall within the next few passages of the further moon."
"And what, think you, may have been the fate of the princess, Dejah Thoris?" I asked as casually as possible.
"She is dead," he answered (она мертва, — ответил он). "This much was learned from a green warrior (по крайней мере, так удалось узнать у зеленого воина; this much — хоть это, по крайней мере) recently captured by our forces in the south (которого наши войска взяли в плен на юге). She escaped from the hordes of Thark (она сбежала от таркианских племен) with a strange creature of another world (вместе со странным существом из другого мира), only to fall into the hands of the Warhoons (но лишь для того, чтобы попасть в руки ворхунцев). Their thoats were found wandering upon the sea bottom (их тотов видели блуждающими по дну моря) and evidences of a bloody conflict were discovered nearby (а следы кровавого столкновения были обнаружены поблизости)."
force [fO: s], conflict ['kOnflIkt]

While this information was in no way reassuring (хотя эта информация ни в коей мере не была утешительной), neither was it at all conclusive proof of the death of Dejah Thoris (но она и не являлась решительным доказательством смерти Дежи Торис; conclusive — завершающий, конечный; решающий, убедительный), and so I determined to make every effort possible (и поэтому я решил приложить все возможные усилия) to reach Helium as quickly as I could (чтобы добраться до Гелиума как можно скорее: «так быстро, как могу») and carry to Tardos Mors such news of his granddaughter's possible whereabouts (и принести Тардосу Морсу сведения о возможном месте пребывания его внучки) as lay in my power (насколько это было в моих силах; to lie in smth. — заключаться в чем-либо: «лежать в чем-либо»).
conclusive [kqn'klu: sIv], whereabouts ['weqrqbauts]
While this information was in no way reassuring, neither was it at all conclusive proof of the death of Dejah Thoris, and so I determined to make every effort possible to reach Helium as quickly as I could and carry to Tardos Mors such news of his granddaughter's possible whereabouts as lay in my power.
Ten days after leaving the three Ptor brothers I arrived at Zodanga (через десять дней после того, как я покинул трех братьев /дома/ Птора, я прибыл в Зодангу). From the moment that I had come in contact with the red inhabitants of Mars (с того момента, как я столкнулся с красными обитателями Марса) I had noticed that Woola drew a great amount of unwelcome attention to me (я заметил, что Вула привлекает ко мне слишком много ненужного внимания; unwelcome — нежеланный, нежелательный), since the huge brute belonged to a species (так как это огромное животное принадлежало к тому виду) which is never domesticated by the red men (который
unwelcome [An'welkqm], species ['spi: Si:z], domesticate [dq'mestIkeIt]
Ten days after leaving the three Ptor brothers I arrived at Zodanga. From the moment that I had come in contact with the red inhabitants of Mars I had noticed that Woola drew a great amount of unwelcome attention to me, since the huge brute belonged to a species which is never domesticated by the red men. Were one to stroll down Broadway with a Numidian lion at his heels the effect would be somewhat similar to that which I should have produced had I entered Zodanga with Woola.
The very thought of parting with the faithful fellow (сама мысль о необходимости расстаться с верным другом) caused me so great regret and genuine sorrow (причиняла мне такое большое сожаление и искреннюю печаль) that I put it off until just before we arrived at the city's gates (что я отгонял ее, пока мы не дошли до самых ворот города; to put off — отгонять, откладывать); but then, finally, it became imperative that we separate (но там, наконец, стало необходимо, чтобы мы расстались; imperative — настоятельный, насущный). Had nothing further than my own safety or pleasure been at stake (если бы под угрозой была только: «ничего более, чем» моя безопасность или мое удовольствие; stake — ставка; to be at stake — быть поставленным на карту, быть в опасности) no argument could have prevailed upon me (то никакие доводы не убедили бы меня; to prevail on — убедить, уговорить; to prevail — торжествовать, одержать победу; преобладать, господствовать, превалировать) to turn away the one creature upon Barsoom (прогнать единственное существо на Барсуме; to turn away — прогонять), that had never failed in a demonstration of affection and loyalty (которое неустанно демонстрировало /мне/ свою привязанность и верность; to fail in — иметь недостаток в чем-либо); but as I would willingly have offered my life in the service of her (но так как я охотно предложил бы свою жизнь в услужение той) in search of whom I was about to challenge the unknown dangers (в поисках которой я готов был бросить вызов неизвестным опасностям) of this, to me, mysterious city (этого загадочного для меня города), I could not permit even Woola's life to threaten the success of my venture (я не мог позволить, чтобы даже само существование Вулы угрожало успеху моего рискованного предприятия; venture — опасная затея), much less his momentary happiness (не говоря уже о его сиюминутном благополучии), for I doubted not he soon would forget me (так как я нисколько не сомневался, что он скоро забудет меня). And so I bade the poor beast an affectionate farewell (и поэтому я тепло попрощался с бедным животным), promising him, however (пообещав ему, однако) that if I came through my adventure in safety (что если я благополучно переживу свое приключение; to come through — перенести, пережить; safety — безопасность; сохранность) that in some way I should find the means to search him out (то каким-то образом я найду возможность разыскать его).
genuine ['dZenjuIn], prevail [prI'veIl], momentary ['moumqnt(q)rI]
The very thought of parting with the faithful fellow caused me so great regret and genuine sorrow that I put it off until just before we arrived at the city's gates; but then, finally, it became imperative that we separate. Had nothing further than my own safety or pleasure been at stake no argument could have prevailed upon me to turn away the one creature upon Barsoom that had never failed in a demonstration of affection and loyalty; but as I would willingly have offered my life in the service of her in search of whom I was about to challenge the unknown dangers of this, to me, mysterious city, I could not permit even Woola's life to threaten the success of my venture, much less his momentary happiness, for I doubted not he soon would forget me. And so I bade the poor beast an affectionate farewell, promising him, however, that if I came through my adventure in safety that in some way I should find the means to search him out.
He seemed to understand me fully (казалось, он абсолютно понял меня), and when I pointed back in the direction of Thark (и когда я показал /рукой/ назад в направлении Тарка) he turned sorrowfully away (он печально повернул прочь), nor could I bear to watch him go (и мне было невыносимо смотреть, как он уходит); but resolutely set my face toward Zodanga (но я решительно повернулся лицом к Зоданге) and with a touch of heartsickness approached her frowning walls (и с ощущением боли в сердце приблизился к его грозным стенам; frowning — хмурый; грозный; to frown — смотреть неодобрительно; хмурить брови, насупиться).
