And then as I was hurrying off I heard him say, quite loudly, to the doctor (убегая, я слышал, как он сказал доктору, довольно громко; to hurry off — поспешно уйти, уехать): —
“I’ll have no favourites on my ship (на моем корабле не будет любимчиков).” I assure you I was quite of the squire’s way of thinking (уверяю вас, я думал о нем точно, как сквайр), and hated the captain deeply (и возненавидел капитана глубоко = до глубины души).
swivel [swɪvl] brass [brɑ:s] loudly [`laudlɪ] favourites [`feɪvərɪts] hated [`heɪtɪd]
“That’s a good man, captain,” said the doctor.
“Very likely sir,” replied Captain Smollett. “Easy with that, men — easy,” he ran on, to the fellows who were shifting the powder; and then suddenly observing me examining the swivel we carried amidships, a long brass nine — “Here, you ship’s boy,” he cried, “out o’ that! Off with you to the cook and get some work.”
And then as I was hurrying off I heard him say, quite loudly, to the doctor: —
“I’ll have no favourites on my ship.” I assure you I was quite of the squire’s way of thinking, and hated the captain deeply.
Chapter X (глава 10)
The Voyage (плавание)
ALL that night we were in a great bustle (всю
“Now, Barbecue, tip us a stave (эй, Окорок, затяни-ка песню; to tip — давать /на чай/, сваливать; stave — палка; стих, строфа),” cried one voice (крикнул один голос).
“The old one (старую),” cried another (крикнул другой).
bustle [bʌsl] stowed [stəud] voyage [`vɔɪɪʤ] weary [`wɪərɪ] whistle [wɪsl] lantern [`læntən]
ALL that night we were in a great bustle getting things stowed in their place, and boatfuls of the squire’s friends, Mr. Blandly and the like, coming off to wish him a good voyage and a safe return. We never had a night at the “Admiral Benbow” when I had half the work; and I was dog-tired when a little before dawn, the boatswain sounded his pipe, and the crew began to man the capstan-bars. I might have been twice as weary, yet I would not have left the deck; all was so new and interesting to me — the brief commands, the shrill not of the whistle, the men bustling to their places in the glimmer of the ship’s lanterns.
“Now, Barbecue, tip us a stave,” cried one voice.
“The old one,” cried another.
“Ay, ay, mates (есть, ребята),” said Long John, who was standing by with his crutch under his arm (сказал Долговязый Джон, стоявший рядом с костылем под мышкой), and at once broke out in the air and words I knew so well (и
And then the whole crew bore chorus (и затем вся команда подхватывала хором; to bear — произвести, нести, поддержать; chorus — хор, припев): —
“You — ho — ho, and a bottle of rum (йо-хо-хо, и бутылка рому)!”And at the third “ho!” drove the bars before them with a will (и при третьем «хо» /матросы/ нажали на брусья лебедки энергично; to drive — приводить в действие, гнать; will — воля, желание, энтузиазм). Even at that exciting moment it carried me back to the old “Admiral Benbow” in a second (даже в этот захватывающий момент мне вмиг припомнился старый «Адмирал Бенбоу»; to carry back — возвращать /в прошлое/, напоминать); and I seemed to hear the voice of the captain piping in the chorus (мне показалось, что я слышу голос /покойного/ капитана, подпевающего в хоре; to pipe — свистеть; петь, пронзительно говорить).
whole [həul] chorus [`kɔ:rəs] exciting [ɪk`saɪtɪŋ] voice [vɔɪs]
“Ay, ay, mates,” said Long John, who was standing by with his crutch under his arm, and at once broke out in the air and words I knew so well —
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest — ”And then the whole crew bore chorus: —
“You — ho — ho, and a bottle of rum!”And at the third “ho!” drove the bars before them with a will. Even at that exciting moment it carried me back to the old “Admiral Benbow” in a second; and I seemed to hear the voice of the captain piping in the chorus.
But soon the anchor was short up (но вскоре якорь был коротко = полностью поднят); soon it was hanging dripping at the bows (/вскоре он/ был укреплен на носу корабля, с него капала вода; dripping — капающий, стекающий каплями, мокрый); soon the sails began to draw (паруса начали раздуваться; to draw — тащить; натягивать), and the land and shipping to flit by on either side (а земля и суда — /стремительно/ удаляться от нас с обеих сторон; to flit — порхать, мелькать); and before I could lie down to snatch an hour of slumber (и прежде чем я мог прилечь, чтобы урвать часок сна = хоть немного подремать) the Hispaniola had begun her voyage to the Isle of Treasure (Испаньола начала свое плавание к Острову Сокровищ).
I am not going to relate that voyage in detail (я не собираюсь описывать это плавание в деталях; to relate — рассказывать, затрагивать). It was fairly prosperous (оно было очень удачным; fairly — фактически, совершенно; prosperous — процветающий, удачный, попутный /ветер/; to prosper — благоденствовать, преуспевать, процветать; благоприятствовать, подходить). The ship proved to be a good ship (корабль оказался хорошим судном), the crew were capable seamen (экипаж состоял из опытных моряков; capable — способный), and the captain thoroughly understood his business (капитан превосходно знал свое дело). But before we came the length of Treasure Island (но прежде, чем мы достигли длины = берега Острова Сокровищ), two or three things had happened which require to be known (две-три вещи произошло, которые требуют того, чтобы быть известными = о которых стоит упомянуть).
