Роберт был в этой лавке уже, наверное, 500 раз и каждый раз удивлялся тому многообразию присутствующего здесь хлама, за который посетители готовы были отдавать весьма приличные деньги. Мальчик зашёл за прилавок, взял мешок с мусором, увидел стоявшую рядом на полу старую пустую бутылку и подумал, что не будет её выбрасывать, а возьмет к себе на чердак, чтобы набирать в нее дождевую воду с крыши.

Chapter 2. Brandon

Brandon was not going to go to school today. Of course, his parents weren’t supposed to know this. Therefore, he woke up as usual at 7:30 in the morning, had breakfast of fried bacon and eggs, took his backpack with his notebooks, said goodbye to his mother and left the house.

He lived with his parents at Lavender Grove, in a small two-storey brown brick house with a small garden in front of the house and a beautiful lawn in the back garden.

Brandon studied at Haggerston School, on Thurtle Road, and the Headteacher, Dr Jane Keely, had promised to call his parents in for a meeting if he scored below 55 points on the test again. Therefore, in order not to upset a respected teacher, he was not going to take the test today.

Учился Брэндон в школе Хаггерстон, что на Тёртл-роуд, и учительница Джейн Кили пообещала ему вызвать родителей на отдельную беседу, если он снова напишет тест меньше чем на 55 баллов. Поэтому, чтобы не расстраивать уважаемую учительницу, тест он писать сегодня не собирался.

Brandon had other plans. Yesterday he had agreed with his homeless friend, Robert, to meet that morning in Haggerston Park near the school and watch the cyclists training and doing crazy stunts on the ramp on their BMXs.

У Брэндона были другие планы. Еще вчера он договорился со своим бездомным приятелем Робертом встретиться с утра в Хаггерстон Парке, рядом со школой, и посмотреть тренировку спортсменов, которые на своих BMX вытворяли там, на рампе, сумасшедшие трюки.

Robert was already waiting for his friend, sitting on the grass under a spreading oak tree. Brandon crept from behind imperceptibly, or so it seemed to him. He wanted to impress his mate, by dropping onto his knees the packet of sandwiches which he had not eaten at breakfast and had secretly taken from home for his friend. But Robert turned round deftly and snatched the packet from his hands:

уже ждал своего приятеля, сидя на траве под раскидистым дубом. Брэндон подкрался сзади, как ему казалось, незаметно и хотел ошарашить товарища, плюхнув ему на коленки сверток с сэндвичами, которые он не стал есть за завтраком и тайно вынес из дома для своего друга, но Роберт ловко обернулся и выхватил сверток у него из рук:

‘Let’s go, Chingachgook.’

The guys went along the path to the BMX ramp and track and chose a good position for watching: they could see everything that was happening, but they were almost invisible behind the low bushes.

‘Where’s Will?’ asked Rob.

‘He’s at school today. In May there will be exams, and, considering his progress, it’s impossible for him to skip lessons now.’

– Пойдем, Чингачгук.

Ребята прошли по дорожке к рампе и треку для катания на BMX и заняли хорошее место для наблюдения – они могли видеть все происходящее, но сами они могли оставаться незамеченными за низким кустарником.

– А где Уилл? – спросил Роб.

– Он сегодня на уроках. В мае экзамены, а с его успеваемостью сейчас прогуливать нельзя.

Chapter 3. William

William was not a stupid guy; on the contrary – among his friends he was considered the most intelligent and talented. Moreover, he was a “professor’s son”.

Уильям не был глупым парнем, наоборот – среди друзей он считался самым сообразительным и способным. Тем более что он был «профессорским сынком».

But he didn’t want to try to get good grades at school, so in the ratings of the class’s progress he crawled at the end of the list, mainly because of his unconventional logic and his absence from the classroom.

Но вот стараться получать хорошие оценки в школе ему совсем не хотелось, поэтому в рейтинге успеваемости класса он плелся в конце списка, в основном из-за нестандартного мышления и своего отсутствия на уроках.

Unfortunately his teacher, Jane Keely, had paid particular attention to his attendance in the last few weeks and threatened to call his parents if he ever came late or missed the lessons.

Как назло, в последние несколько недель его преподаватель, Джейн Кили, стала уделять его посещаемости особое внимание и грозила позвонить родителям, если он еще хоть раз опоздает или пропустит занятие.

Therefore, in his bedroom this morning three alarm clocks rang at once. To turn off the last one, he crawled with his eyes closed to the other end of the bed, dragging a pillow under his head. Turning off the annoying beeping, he slept for another 10 minutes in the yoga position of “Prasarita”, and then gathered all his strength and crawled to the bathroom. He came into the dining room for breakfast, already dressed and with his hair brushed.
