‘I was to say that Maw and Meggins disclaim all responsibility,’ continued the other (я

должен сказать, что «Мо энд Меггинс» отрицает какую бы то ни было: «всю» ответственность; to be + неопр. форма глагола – быть обязанным сделать; to disclaim – отказываться, отступаться, отрекаться, заявлять об отказе). ‘They admit to no liability at all (они не допускают, что несут какие бы то ни было обязательства; liability – обязательство, ответственность; liable – обязанный: liable for military service – военнообязанный; ответственный: to be liable for one’s children – нести ответственность за своих детей), but in consideration of your son’s services, they wish to present you with a certain sum as compensation (но, учитывая заслуги вашего сына, в качестве компенсации желают выплатить вам определенную сумму; consideration – соображение; in consideration of smth. – принимая во внимание что-либо; to present – преподносить; дарить).’

Mr White dropped his wife’s hand, and rising to his feet, gazed with a look of horror at his visitor (мистер Уайт выпустил руку жены и, поднявшись на ноги, с ужасом посмотрел: «уставился со взглядом ужаса» на посетителя; to drop – капать; ронять; выпускать, позволить упасть). His dry lips shaped the words (его сухие губы прошептали слова; to shape – придавать форму, оформить; shape – форма, очертание), ‘How much (сколько)?’

‘Two hundred pounds,’ was the answer (двести фунтов, – был ответ).

Unconscious of his wife’s shriek (не обращая внимания на вопль жены; unconscious – неосознающий), the old man smiled faintly, put out his hands like a sightless man (старик слабо улыбнулся, протянул, как незрячий, перед собой руки; sight – зрение), and dropped, a senseless heap, to the floor (и бесчувственным ворохом упал на пол; heap – груда, куча).

In the huge new cemetery, some two miles distant (на громадном новом кладбище, где-то в двух милях от них; distant – дальний; отдаленный), the old people buried their dead (старики похоронили своего сына: «старые люди похоронили своего мертвого»), and came back to the house steeped in shadow and silence (и

It was all over so quickly that at first they could hardly realize it (все закончилось так быстро, что сначала они едва это могли понять), and remained in a state of expectation as though of something else to happen (и остались в состоянии ожидания, словно еще что-то должно было случиться) – something else which was to lighten this load, too heavy for old hearts to bear (что-то еще, что должно было облегчить эту ношу, слишком тяжелую для старых сердец; to bear – носить, нести).

But the days passed, and expectation gave place to resignation (но дни шли, и ожидание сменилось смирением; to give – давать; place – место; to give place – уступать, сменяться) – the hopeless resignation of the old, sometimes miscalled apathy (безнадежным смирением стариков, что иногда неверно называют апатией). Sometimes they hardly exchanged a word, for now they had nothing to talk about (иногда они едва обменивались /парой/ слов, ибо теперь им не о чем было говорить), and their days were long to weariness (и дни их были утомительно длинны: «длинны до утомительности»; weariness – усталость, истощение; скука, утомительность; weary – усталый, изнуренный, утомленный).

It was about a week after that the old man, waking suddenly in the night, stretched out his hand and found himself alone (примерно через неделю после этого мистер Уайт, проснувшись внезапно ночью, протянул руку и обнаружил, что он один /в постели/). The room was in darkness, and the sound of subdued weeping came from the window (в комнате было темно, и приглушенный /звук/ плача доносился от окна; darkness – темнота). He raised himself in bed and listened (он приподнялся в постели и прислушался).

‘Come back,’ he said tenderly (иди сюда: «вернись», – нежно сказал он). ‘You will be cold (ты замерзнешь; cold – холодный).’

‘It is colder for my son,’ said the old woman, and wept afresh (моему сыну еще холоднее, – сказала его жена и опять заплакала). The sound of her sobs died away on his ears (звук ее рыданий вскоре перестал восприниматься его ухом; to die – умирать; to die away – затухать; исчезать). The bed was warm, and his eyes heavy with sleep (в постели было тепло, а его глаза отяжелели ото сна; heavy – тяжелый). He dozed fitfully, and then slept until a sudden wild cry from his wife awoke him with a start (он дремал урывками, а затем /уснул и/ спал, пока, вздрогнув, не проснулся от внезапного дикого крика его жены: «пока внезапный дикий крик его жены не разбудил его с вздрагиванием»; fitfully – судорожно; прерывисто, толчками, урывками).
