Dawkins got up (Докинс встал).

‘Please let me hear no more of it (пожалуйста, избавьте меня от дальнейшего: «позвольте мне больше об этом не слышать»),’ he said. ‘The dead do not return (мертвые не возвращаются). In what state or under what condition they exist has not been revealed to us (в каком состоянии или при каких условиях они существуют, нам не дано знать; to reveal – открывать; показывать; разоблачать). But they have done with all material things (но с материальным миром они связи не имеют: «они покончили со всеми материальными вещами»).’

‘But I must tell you more (но я должен

вам рассказать еще кое-что: «больше»),’ said the doctor. ‘Two nights ago I was rung up, but very faintly, and could only hear whispers (два дня назад зазвонил телефон: «два вечера назад мне позвонили», но очень тихо, и, сняв трубку, я расслышал только шепот; faint – слабый /недостаточный для физического или умственного восприятия/; faintly – слабо). I instantly inquired where the call came from and was told it came from the prison (я немедленно справился, откуда звонили, и мне сказали, что звонок был из тюрьмы). I rang up the prison, and Warder Draycott told me that nobody had rung me up (я позвонил в тюрьму, и надзиратель Дрейкотт сказал мне, что никто мне не звонил). He, too, was conscious of a presence (он также чувствовал чье-то присутствие).’

‘I think that man drinks,’ said Dawkins, sharply (мне кажется, он пьет, – резко сказал Докинс).

The doctor paused a moment (доктор на мгновение сделал паузу).

‘My dear fellow, you should not say that sort of thing (мой дорогой друг, вам не следует так говорить),’ he said. ‘He is one of the steadiest men we have got (он один из наших самых надежных людей; steady – спокойный, уравновешенный). And if he drinks, why not I also (и если он пьет, то почему не сказать этого и обо мне: «почему не я тоже»)?’

 Dawkins got up.

The chaplain sat down again (священник снова сел).

‘You must forgive me (вы должны меня извинить),’ he said, ‘but I can’t go into this (но я не могу в это вдаваться; to go into smth. – что-либо исследовать, внимательно изучать; обсуждать). These are dangerous matters to meddle with (опасно шутить с такими вещами; to meddle – заниматься, интересоваться; вмешиваться, совать свой нос). Besides, how do you know it is not a hoax (кроме того, откуда вам знать, что это не розыгрыш; hoax – обман; ложь, мистификация, неправда)?’

‘Played by whom (чей; to play –

разыгрывать)?’ asked the doctor. ‘Hark (слушайте; to hark – /уст./ слушать; hark! – слушай!; чу!)!’

The telephone bell suddenly rang (внезапно зазвонил телефон). It was clearly audible to the doctor (доктор слышал его вполне отчетливо: «он был ясно слышен доктору»).

‘Don’t you hear it (разве вы не слышите)?’ he said.

‘Hear what (слышу что)?’

‘The telephone bell ringing (звонок телефона).’

‘I hear no bell,’ said the chaplain, rather angrily (не слышу я /никакого/ звонка, – довольно сердито сказал священник). ‘There is no bell ringing (нет никакого телефонного звонка).’

The doctor did not answer, but went through into his study, and turned on the lights (доктор не ответил, но пересек комнату, прошел в свой кабинет и включил свет; to go through – пересекать). Then he took the receiver and mouthpiece off its hook (затем он снял трубку с рычага).

 The chaplain sat down again.

‘You must forgive me,’ he said, ‘but I can’t go into this. These are dangerous matters to meddle with. Besides, how do you know it is not a hoax?’

‘Played by whom?’ asked the doctor. ‘Hark!’

‘Don’t you hear it?’ he said.

‘Hear what?’

‘The telephone bell ringing.’

‘I hear no bell,’ said the chaplain, rather angrily. ‘There is no bell ringing.’

The doctor did not answer, but went through into his study, and turned on the lights. Then he took the receiver and mouthpiece off its hook.

‘Yes?’ he said, in a voice that trembled (да? – сказал он дрожащим голосом). ‘Who is it (кто это)? Yes: Mr Dawkins is here (да, мистер Докинс здесь). I will try and get him to speak to you (я попытаюсь убедить его поговорить с вами).’

He went back into the other room (он вернулся в гостиную: «другую комнату»).

‘Dawkins,’ he said, ‘there is a soul in agony (Докинс, – сказал он, – одна душа мучается; agony – мука, мучение, страдание /душевное или физическое/; агония, предсмертное состояние). I pray you to listen (умоляю вас выслушать). For God’s sake come and listen (ради Бога, подойдите к телефону и выслушайте).’

The chaplain hesitated a moment (священник мгновение колебался).

‘As you will (как хотите),’ he said.

He took up the receiver and put it to his ear (он взял трубку и поднес к уху).

‘I am Mr Dawkins (я мистер Докинс),’ he said.

He waited (он подождал).

‘I can hear nothing whatever,’ he said at length (я совсем ничего не слышу, – наконец сказал он; whatever – какой бы то ни было, любой). ‘Ah, there was something there (а, вот что-то). The faintest whisper (очень слабый шепот).’
