Poirot explained their errand. The Colonel made no demur. He had two heavy leather suitcases.
“The rest of my kit has gone by long sea,” he explained.
Like most Army men (как и большинство военных; army — военный, армейский) the Colonel was a neat packer (/вещи/ у полковника были аккуратно уложены; to pack — упаковывать, укладывать вещи; packer — упаковщик). “Ah!” Poirot nodded (Пуаро кивнул). These pipe-cleaners corresponded exactly (эти ершики точно совпадали; to correspond — соответствовать; представлять собою, равняться, быть аналогичным) with the one he had found on the floor of the dead man’s compartment (с тем /ершиком/ который он обнаружил на полу купе убитого).

M. Bouc was spokesman. He was very deferential and polite as he explained their errand.
