Turning, I beheld the green warriors mounting the ridge (повернувшись, я увидел, как зеленые воины поднимаются на гребень) and looking for their chieftain (и ищут своего вождя). In a moment they saw him and then me (через мгновение они увидели его, а затем и меня), but scarcely had they discovered me than I commenced firing (но едва лишь они обнаружили меня, как я начал стрелять), lying flat upon my belly in the moss (лежа на животе на мху; flat — плоский; растянувшийся во всю длину). In a moment they saw him, and then me; but scarcely had they discovered me than I commenced firing, lying flat upon my belly in the moss. I had an even hundred rounds in the magazine of my rifle, and another hundred in the belt at my back, and I kept up a continuous stream of fire until I saw all of the warriors who had been first to return from behind the ridge either dead or scurrying to cover.
My respite was short-lived however (моя передышка, однако, была недолгой), for soon the entire party, numbering some thousand men (так как вскоре весь отряд, насчитывающий около тысячи человек), came charging into view, racing madly toward me (показался передо мной, /они/ атаковали и бешено мчались ко мне). I fired until my rifle was empty (я стрелял, пока мое ружье не опустело; empty — пустой) and they were almost upon me (и они уже почти настигли меня), and then a glance showing me that Dejah Thoris and Sola had disappeared among the hills (и когда быстрый взгляд показал мне, что Дежа Торис и Сола скрылись среди холмов), I sprang up, throwing down my useless gun (я вскочил, отбросив свое бесполезное ружье), and started away in the direction opposite to that taken by Sola and her charge (и отправился в направлении, противоположном тому, которое выбрали Сола и ее подопечная).

If ever Martians had an exhibition of jumping (если марсиане когда-либо имели возможность /увидеть/ демонстрацию прыжков), it was granted those astonished warriors on that day long years ago (то она была предоставлена этим изумленным воинам в тот день много лет назад; to grant — даровать, дарить; to astonish — удивлять, изумлять), but while it led them away from Dejah Thoris (но хотя она уводила их прочь от Дежа Торис) it did not distract their attention from endeavoring to capture me (она не отвлекала их внимания от стремления поймать меня).

If ever Martians had an exhibition of jumping, it was granted those astonished warriors on that day long years ago, but while it led them away from Dejah Thoris it did not distract their attention from endeavoring to capture me.
They raced wildly after me until, finally, my foot struck a projecting piece of quartz, and down I went sprawling upon the moss. As I looked up they were upon me, and although I drew my long-sword in an attempt to sell my life as dearly as possible, it was soon over. I reeled beneath their blows which fell upon me in perfect torrents; my head swam; all was black, and I went down beneath them to oblivion.
CHAPTER XVIII
It must have been several hours before I regained consciousness (прошло, должно быть, несколько часов, прежде чем я снова пришел в себя) and I well remember the feeling of surprise (и я хорошо помню чувство удивления) which swept over me as I realized that I was not dead (которое охватило меня, когда я осознал, что я не умер; to sweep — мести; сметать; налетать; обуять, охватить).
I was lying among a pile of sleeping silks and furs (я лежал среди груды спальных шелков и мехов) in the corner of a small room in which were several green warriors (в углу маленькой комнаты, в которой находилось несколько зеленых воинов), and bending over me was an ancient and ugly female (а надо мной склонилась старая и безобразная женщина).
As I opened my eyes she turned to one of the warriors (когда я открыл глаза, она повернулась к одному из воинов), saying,
"He will live (он будет жить), O Jed."
"'Tis well," replied the one so addressed (это хорошо, — ответил тот, к кому она так обращалась), rising and approaching my couch (/он/ встал и подошел к моему ложу), "he should render rare sport for the great games (он должен обеспечить редкостное развлечение на больших играх; to render — оказывать, обеспечивать; sport — спорт; забава, развлечение)."
