weird [wI@d], vague [veIg], pressure ['preS@]
But I was eager to get back to my charge. The melancholy of the moor, the death of the unfortunate pony, the weird sound which had been associated with the grim legend of the Baskervilles, all these things tinged my thoughts with sadness. Then on the top of these more or less vague impressions there had come the definite and distinct warning of Miss Stapleton, delivered with such intense earnestness that I could not doubt that some grave and deep reason lay behind it. I resisted all pressure to stay for lunch, and I set off at once upon my return journey, taking the grass-grown path by which we had come.
It seems, however, that there must have been some short cut ( однако, должно быть, там был какой-то /более/ короткий путь; cut — разрез; проход) for those who knew it (для
"I have run all the way (я всю дорогу бежала) in order to cut you off (чтобы перехватить вас; to cut off — отрезать /путь/), Dr. Watson," said she. "I had not even time to put on my hat (у меня даже не было времени надеть шляпу). I must not stop (я не должна = мне нельзя задерживаться; to stop — останавливаться; задерживаться), or my brother may miss me (иначе брат может хватиться меня; to miss — потерпеть неудачу; обнаружить отсутствие). I wanted to say to you (я хочу вам сказать) how sorry I am about the stupid mistake I made (что сожалею о той глупой ошибке, что я допустила = сделала) in thinking that you were Sir Henry (полагая, что вы — это сэр Генри). Please forget the words I said (пожалуйста, забудьте слова, /которые/ я сказала), which have no application whatever to you (они не имеют к вам никакого отношения: «применения»)."
astound [@s'taund], exertion [Ig'z@:S(@)n], stupid ['stju:pId]
It seems, however, that there must have been some short cut for those who knew it, for before I had reached the road I was astounded to see Miss Stapleton sitting upon a rock by the side of the track. Her face was beautifully flushed with her exertions, and she held her hand to her side.
"I have run all the way in order to cut you off, Dr. Watson," said she. "I had not even time to put on my hat. I must not stop, or my brother may miss me. I wanted to say to you how sorry I am about the stupid mistake I made in thinking that you were Sir Henry. Please forget the words I said, which have no application whatever to you."
"But I can't forget them (но я не могу забыть их), Miss Stapleton," said I. "I am Sir Henry's friend (я друг сэра Генри), and his welfare is a very close concern of mine (и его благополучие очень сильно меня беспокоит). Tell me why it was that (расскажите мне, почему так вышло: «так было») you were so eager that Sir Henry should return to London (что вы так настаивали, чтобы сэр Генри вернулся в Лондон)."
"A woman's whim (женский каприз), Dr. Watson. When you know me better you will understand (когда вы узнаете меня лучше, то поймете) that I cannot always give reasons for what I say or do (что я не всегда могу объяснить то, что говорю или делаю; to give reasons — мотивировать: «дать причины»)."
"No, no. I remember the thrill in your voice (я помню волнение в вашем голосе). I remember the look in your eyes (я помню ваш взгляд). Please, please, be frank with me (пожалуйста, будьте откровенны со мной), Miss Stapleton, for ever since I have been here (потому что с тех пор, как я здесь) I have been conscious of shadows all round me (я ощущаю вокруг себя /какие-то/ тени; to be conscious of — осознавать). Life has become like that great Grimpen Mire (жизнь стала похожей на ту большую Гримпенскую трясину), with little green patches everywhere (с
An expression of irresolution passed for an instant over her face (выражение нерешительности на мгновение мелькнуло на ее лице; resolution — решительность), but her eyes had hardened again (но взгляд ее снова сделался твердым) when she answered me (когда она отвечала мне).
welfare ['welfE@], thrill [TrIl], convey [k@n'veI]
"But I can't forget them, Miss Stapleton," said I. "I am Sir Henry's friend, and his welfare is a very close concern of mine. Tell me why it was that you were so eager that Sir Henry should return to London."
"A woman's whim, Dr. Watson. When you know me better you will understand that I cannot always give reasons for what I say or do."
"No, no. I remember the thrill in your voice. I remember the look in your eyes. Please, please, be frank with me, Miss Stapleton, for ever since I have been here I have been conscious of shadows all round me. Life has become like that great Grimpen Mire, with little green patches everywhere into which one may sink and with no guide to point the track. Tell me then what it was that you meant, and I will promise to convey your warning to Sir Henry."
An expression of irresolution passed for an instant over her face, but her eyes had hardened again when she answered me.
"You make too much of it (вы все это слишком преувеличиваете), Dr. Watson," said she. "My brother and I were very much shocked by the death of Sir Charles (нас с братом очень сильно поразила смерть сэра Чарльза). We knew him very intimately (мы знали его очень близко), for his favourite walk was over the moor to our house (потому что его любимым маршрутом для прогулок был /путь/ через болота к нашему дому). He was deeply impressed with the curse (он был под сильным впечатлением от проклятия) which hung over his family (что висело над его родом), and when this tragedy came (и когда произошло это несчастье) I naturally felt that there must be some grounds for the fears (я, конечно, считала, что должны быть какие-то основания для тех опасений; to feel — чувствовать; полагать, быть убежденным) which he had expressed (которые он испытывал; to express — выражать). I was distressed therefore (поэтому я очень обеспокоилась; to distress — причинять страдание, мучить) when another member of the family came down to live here (когда другой представитель этого рода приехал сюда жить), and I felt that he should be warned of the danger (и я была убеждена, что его нужно предупредить об опасности) which he will run (с которой он столкнется = которая ему грозит; to run — бежать; to run a danger/a risk — подвергаться риску/опасности). That was all which I intended to convey (вот и все, что я намеревалась сообщить; to convey — перевозить; передавать, сообщать)."
"But what is the danger (но в чем опасность)?"
"You know the story of the hound (вы знаете историю о собаке)?"
"I do not believe in such nonsense (я не верю в подобную чепуху)."
"But I do (а я верю). If you have any influence with Sir Henry (если у вас есть какое-то влияние на сэра Генри), take him away from a place (увезите его из мест) which has always been fatal to his family (которые всегда были роковыми для его рода). The world is wide (мир велик; wide — широкий; обширный). Why should he wish to live at the place of danger (почему он хочет жить в этом опасном месте)?"
