At length the king lifted his hand (наконец король поднял руку).

"Which think ye the fairest, white men (какая /из девушек/, как вы думаете, белые люди, самая прекрасная)?" he asked.

"The first (первая)," said I, unthinkingly (сказал я, не подумав; unthinking— бездумный, легкомысленный). Next second I regretted it (в следующую же секунду я пожалел об этом), for I remembered that Infadoos had said that the fairest woman was offered as a sacrifice (потому что я вспомнил, что Инфадус сказал, что самая красивая женщина приносилась в жертву; to offer— предлагать; приносить /в жертву/).

At last they paused, and a beautiful young woman sprang out of the ranks and began to pirouette in front of us with a grace and vigor which would have put most ballet-girls to shame. At length she fell back exhausted, and another took her place, then another and another, but none of them, either in grace, skill, or personal attractions, came up to the first.

At length the king lifted his hand.

"Which think ye the fairest, white men?" he asked.

"The first," said I, unthinkingly. Next second I regretted it, for I remembered that Infadoos had said that the fairest woman was offered as a sacrifice.

"Then is my mind as your minds (тогда

мое мнение такое же, как ваше: «ваши мнения»; mind— ум, разум; мнение, взгляд), and my eyes as your eyes (и мои глаза /видят/ так же, как и ваши). She is the fairest (она самая красивая); and a sorry thing it is for her, for she must die (и для нее это печально, так как она должна умереть; sorry— огорченный, сожалеющий; печальный, грустный)!"

"Ay, must die(да, должна умереть)!" piped out Gagool (пропищала Гагула), casting a glance from her quick eyes in the direction of the poor girl (бросая взгляд своих быстрых глаз в направлении бедной девушки), who, as yet ignorant of the awful fate in store for her (которая, еще не зная об ужасной участи, которая ожидала ее; ignorant— невежественный, необразованный; несведущий, не знающий; store— запас, резерв; to be in store for smb. — предназначаться для кого-либо, сулить кому-либо в будущем), was standing some twenty yards off in front of a company of girls (стояла ярдах в двадцати перед группой девушек), engaged in nervously picking a flower from her wreath to pieces, petal by petal (и была занята тем, что нервно обрывала цветок из своего венка, лепесток за лепестком; to engage— подвергаться риску; заниматься чем-либо, быть занятым чем-либо; to pick— собирать, снимать /плоды/; щипать; piece— кусок, часть).

"Why, O king (почему, о король)?" said I, restraining my indignation with difficulty (сказал я, с трудом сдерживая свое негодование); "the girl has danced well and pleased us (девушка хорошо танцевала и доставила нам удовольствие); she is fair, too (она, к тому же, красива); it would be hard to reward her with death (было бы жестоко вознаградить ее смертью; hard— твердый; черствый, бесчувственный, бессердечный)."

Twala laughed as he answered (Твала рассмеялся и ответил):

"Then is my mind as your minds, and my eyes as your eyes. She is the fairest; and a sorry thing it is for her, for she must die!"

Thus runs the prophecy of my people (так гласит пророчество моего народа; to run —

бежать; гласить/о документе, тексте и т.п./): `If the king offer not a sacrifice of a fair girl on the day of the dance of maidens (если король не принесет красивую девушку в жертву в день танца дев) to the old ones who sit and watch on the mountains (тем старым, что сидят в горах и охраняют /их/), then shall he fall and his house (тогда он падет и /падет/ его дом; to fall — падать/с высоты/; пасть, быть сброшенным/о правительстве и т.п./, гибнуть).' Look ye, white men, my brother who reigned before me offered not the sacrifice (послушайте вы, белые люди, мой брат, который царствовал до меня, не принес жертву), because of the tears of the woman (из-за слез женщины), and he fell, and his house, and I reign in his stead (и он пал, и /пал/ его дом, и я царствую вместо него; stead — место/место или позиция лица, вещи и т.п., которое замещается другим лицом, вещью и т.п./). It is finished; she must die (покончим с этим: «это окончено = решено», она должна умереть)!" Then, turning to the guards (затем, повернувшись к стражникам /он сказал/) — "Bring her hither (приведите ее сюда); Scragga, make sharp thy spear (Скрагга, наточи свое копье; sharp— острый, остроконечный, отточенный)."

Then, turning to the guards — "Bring her hither; Scragga, make sharp thy spear."

Two of the men stepped forward (двое мужчин шагнули вперед), and as they did so the girl, for the first time realizing her impending fate (и когда они сделали это, девушка, которая только тогда: «в первый раз» осознала, какая судьба ее ожидает; to impend — нависать; нависать, угрожать/об опасности, беде и т.п./; impending — нависающий; грядущий, угрожающий, нависший/об опасности и т.п./), screamed aloud and turned to fly (громко вскрикнула и повернулась, чтобы убежать). But the strong hands caught her first (но сильные руки схватили ее прежде; first — раньше, ранее, сначала/предшествующий какому-то другому объекту по времени/), and brought her, struggling and weeping, up before us (и привели ее, отбивающуюся и плачущую, /и поставили/ перед нами; to struggle — бороться; биться, отбиваться).

"What is thy name, girl (как тебя зовут, девушка; thy = your)?" piped Gagool (пропищала Гагула). "What! wilt thou not answer (что, ты не хочешь отвечать; wilt thou = will you); shall the king's son do his work at once (должен ли сын короля сделать свою работу немедленно)?"

At this hint, Scragga, looking more evil than ever (при этих словах Скрагга, который выглядел более злобным, чем когда-либо; hint — намек), advanced a step and lifted his great spear (сделал шаг вперед и поднял свое огромное копье; to advance — двигать вперед, продвигать), and as he did so I saw Good's hand creep to his revolver (и когда он сделал это, я увидел, как рука Гуда потянулась: «поползла» к /его/ револьверу). The poor girl caught the glint of the cold steel through her tears (бедная девушка заметила блеск холодной стали сквозь слезы), and it sobered her anguish (и он успокоил ее страдания; to sober — успокаивать, унимать; сдерживать, обуздывать; anguish — боль, мука, страдание).
