 “One o’clock came; and then two; and three got under the wire for place; and not a Bird citizen came in for a drink. The streets were deserted except for some ducks and ladies going to the stores. There was only a light drizzle falling then.

“A lonesome man came along and stopped in front of the Blue Snake to scrape the mud off his boots.

“ ‘Pardner,’ says I, ‘what has happened? This morning there was hectic gaiety afoot; and now it seems more like one of them ruined cities of Tyre and Siphon where the lone lizard crawls on the walls of the main portcullis.’

“ ‘The whole town,’ says the muddy man (весь

город, – говорит запачканный грязью человек), ‘is up in Sperry’s wool warehouse (собрался на складе шерсти Сперри; ware – промышленные товары) listening to your side-kicker make a speech (слушает, как ваш друг произносит речь; side-kick – /разг./ закадычный друг; сообщник, пособник). He is some gravy on delivering himself of audible sounds (он мастер извлекать из себя слышимые звуки; gravy – подливка, соус; to deliver – доставлять; произносить /речь/, читать /лекцию/; высказываться) relating to matters and conclusions (касательно вопросов и выводов),’ says the man.

“ ‘Well, I hope he’ll adjourn, sine qua non, pretty soon (что ж, надеюсь, он объявит перерыв, обязательно, очень скоро; to adjourn – откладывать, отсрочивать; объявлять перерыв; sine qua non – /лат./ непременное условие; то, без чего нельзя обойтись),’ says I, ‘for trade languishes (потому как страдает торговля; to languish – слабеть, вянуть, чахнуть).’

“Not a customer did we have that afternoon (ни одного клиента у нас не было после полудня; customer – покупатель; заказчик; клиент). At six o’clock two Mexicans brought Andy to the saloon (в шесть часов два мексиканца привезли Энди в салун; to bring – приводить, приносить, привозить) lying across the back of a burro (лежащего поперек на спине осла; burro – /разг., исп./ осел, ослик). We put him in bed while he still muttered (мы уложили его в постель, а он тем временем еще бормотал) and gesticulated with his hands and feet (и жестикулировал руками и ногами: «кистями и ступнями»).

“ ‘Well, I hope he’ll adjourn, sine qua non, pretty soon,’ says I, ‘for trade languishes.’

“Then I locked up the cash and went out to see what had happened (затем

“ ‘What was it about?’ I asked (о чем она была? – спросил я).

“ ‘Temperance (о трезвости; temperance – воздержание, умеренность /особ. в еде и употреблении алкоголя/; трезвость, воздержание от спиртных напитков),’ says he. ‘And when he got through (и когда он закончил), every man in Bird City signed the pledge for a year (каждый человек в Птичьем Городе дал зарок не пить год; to sign the pledge – /разг./ завязать /с алкоголем/, дать зарок не пить; to sign – подписывать/ся/; pledge – залог, заклад; обет, обещание; обязательство).’ ”
