“Then it is a clue (тогда это улика).”
elucidation [lu:s'den] pipe-cleaner ['papkli:n] tobacco [t'baek] pouch [pat]
Something in his tone surprised the doctor, but before he could ask for elucidation Poirot had made another dive onto the floor.
This time he held out on the palm of his hand — a pipe-cleaner.
“It is perhaps the property of Mr. Ratchett?” suggested the doctor.
“There was no pipe in any of his pockets, and no tobacco or tobacco pouch.”
“Then it is a clue.”
“Oh! decidedly (о, бесспорно; to decide — решать; decided — определенный; бесспорный, явный). And again dropped most conveniently (и
“There was no sign of any weapon (не было никакого следа какого-либо орудия; sign — признак, примета; свидетельство). The murderer must have taken it away with him (убийца, должно быть, забрал его с собой; to take (took, taken) — брать, хватать).”
“I wonder why (интересно, почему; to wonder — интересоваться, желать знать, задаваться вопросом),” mused Poirot (задумчиво пробормотал Пуаро; to muse — находиться в задумчивости; задумчиво говорить, бормотать в раздумье).
decidedly [d'saddl] masculine ['maeskjln] abundance ['bndns] weapon ['wepn]
“Oh! decidedly. And again dropped most conveniently. A masculine clue, this time, you note! One cannot complain of having no clues in this case. There are clues here in abundance. By the way, what have you done with the weapon?”
“There was no sign of any weapon. The murderer must have taken it away with him.”
“I wonder why,” mused Poirot.
“Ah!” The doctor had been delicately exploring (доктор осторожно изучал; delicate — утонченный; требующий осторожного обращения; to explore — исследовать, изучать) the pyjama pockets of the dead man (карманы на пижаме мертвеца).
“I overlooked this (я это проглядел; to overlook — не замечать, проглядеть),” he said. “I unbuttoned the jacket (я расстегнул пуговицы на куртке /пижамы/) and threw it straight back (и сразу отбросил ее назад; to throw (threw, thrown)).”
From the breast pocket (из нагрудного кармана; breast — грудь) he brought out a gold watch (он достал золотые часы; to bring (brought) — приносить). The case was dented savagely (корпус был сильно погнут; case — ящик, коробка; корпус /часов и т.п./; to dent — вдавливать, вминать; оставлять выбоину; savage — дикий; свирепый), and the hands pointed to a quarter past one (и стрелки указывали на четверть второго; hand — рука, кисть руки; стрелка /часов, барометра и т.п./).
exploring [k'spl:r] savagely ['saevdl] quarter ['kw:t]
“Ah!” The doctor had been delicately exploring the pyjama pockets of the dead man.
“I overlooked this,” he said. “I unbuttoned the jacket and threw it straight back.”
From the breast pocket he brought out a gold watch. The case was dented savagely, and the hands pointed to a quarter past one.
“You see (вы видите)?” cried Constantine eagerly (нетерпеливо воскликнул Константин; to cry — кричать; вскрикнуть). “This gives us the hour of the crime (это
“It is possible, yes (да, это возможно). It is certainly possible (это определенно возможно).”
hour ['a] calculation [kaelkj'len] midnight ['mdnat]
“You see?” cried Constantine eagerly. “This gives us the hour of the crime. It agrees with my calculations. Between midnight and two in the morning is what I said, and probably about one o’clock, though it is difficult to be exact in these matters. Eh bien, here is confirmation. A quarter past one. That was the hour of the crime.”
“It is possible, yes. It is certainly possible.”
The doctor looked at him curiously (доктор взглянул на него с любопытством; curious — любознательный; любопытный). “You will pardon me, M. Poirot (простите меня, мсье Пуаро), but I do not quite understand you (но я не вполне вас понимаю).”
“I do not understand myself (я сам не понимаю),” said Poirot. “I understand nothing at all (я вообще ничего не понимаю). And, as you perceive (и, как вы понимаете; to perceive — понимать; ощущать, чувствовать), it worries me (это меня беспокоит; to worry — надоедать; беспокоить, волновать).”
pardon ['p:dn] perceive [p'si:v] worry ['wr]
The doctor looked at him curiously. “You will pardon me, M. Poirot, but I do not quite understand you.”
“I do not understand myself,” said Poirot. “I understand nothing at all. And, as you perceive, it worries me.”
He sighed (он вздохнул) and bent over the little table (и склонился над маленьким столиком) examining the charred fragment of paper (рассматривая обуглившиеся клочки бумаги). He murmured to himself (он пробормотал про себя), “What I need at this moment (то, что мне нужно в этот самый момент) is an old-fashioned woman’s hat-box (так это старомодная картонка для дамской шляпы; fashion — образ, манера; мода; hat — шляпа, box — коробка).”
Dr. Constantine was at a loss (доктор Константин растерялся; loss — потеря, лишение, to be at a loss — растеряться, смешаться; быть в замешательстве) to know (/и не/ знал) what to make of this singular remark (что и подумать об этом странном замечании; singular — исключительный; странный, необычный). In any case (в любом случае) Poirot gave him no time for questions (Пуаро не дал ему времени на расспросы; question — вопрос). Opening the door into the corridor (открыв дверь в коридор), he called for the conductor (он позвал проводника).
