And the little Mermaid laughed for pleasure (и маленькая Русалочка засмеялась от удовольствия), and hid her face in her hands (и спрятала свое лицо в своих руках = и закрыла свое лицо руками; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать).

`But how shall I send my soul from me (но как же мне прогнать прочь мою душу)?' cried the young Fisherman (закричал молодой Рыбак). `Tell me how I may do it (скажи мне, как я могу это сделать), and lo! it shall be done (и вмиг это будет сделано).'

`Alas (увы)! I know not (я не знаю),' said the little Mermaid: `the Sea-folk have no souls (у Морского Народа нет душ).' And she sank down into the deep (и она опустилась в глубину), looking wistfully at him (глядя на него с тоской/задумчиво).

Tell me how I can send my soul away from me (скажи мне, как я могу прогнать ее прочь), for in truth (так как поистине) I have no need of it (она мне не нужна). Of what value is my soul to me (какая же важность/полезность моей души /для меня/; value — ценность)? I cannot see it (я не могу увидеть ее /душу/). I may not touch it (я не могу потрогать ее). I do not know it (я не знаю ее).'

There is no thing more precious (нет ничего: «вещи» драгоценнее) than a human soul (чем человеческая душа), nor any earthly thing (и ничто земное: «и никакая земная/суетная вещь») that can be weighed with it (не может сравниться с ней; to weigh — взвешивать; сравнивать, соизмерять).

And the Priest beat his breast, and answered, `Alack, Alack, thou art mad, or hast eaten of poisonous herb, for the soul is the noblest part of man, and was given to us by God that we should nobly use it. There is no thing more precious than a human soul, nor any earthly thing that can be weighed with it.

It is worth all the gold (она стоит/имеет ценность всего золота) that is in the world (что есть в этом мире), and is more precious (и драгоценнее) than the rubies of the kings (чем царские рубины). Therefore, my son (поэтому, сын мой), think not any more of this matter (больше не думай об этом /деле/), for it is a sin (потому как это грех) that may not be forgiven (который не может быть прощен; to forgive (forgave, forgiven) — прощать; оставлять, отпускать грехи). And as for the Sea-folk (а что касается Морского Народа), they are lost (они заблудшие; lost — потерянный; заблудившийся), and they who would traffic with them (и те, кто будут иметь с ними дело; to traffic — торговать; иметь дело) are lost also (тоже окажутся заблудшими). It is worth all the gold that is in the world, and is more precious than the rubies of the kings. Therefore, my son, think not any more of this matter, for it is a sin that may not be forgiven. And as for the Sea-folk, they are lost, and they who would traffic with them are lost also. They are as the beasts of the field that know not good from evil, and for them the Lord has not died.'

The young Fisherman's eyes filled with tears (глаза молодого Рыбака наполнились слезами) when he heard the bitter words of the Priest (когда он услышал резкие слова Священника; bitter — горький; резкий, сильный), and he rose up from his knees (и он поднялся с колен; to rise (rose, risen)) and said to him, `Father, the Fauns live in the forest and are glad (фавны живут в лесу и счастливы), and on the rocks sit the Mermen (и на скалах сидят Тритоны/Водяные) with their harps of red gold (с арфами из красного/червонного золота). Let me be as they are (позволь мне быть такими, как они), I beseech thee (я умоляю тебя), for their days are as the days of flowers (потому что их жизни такие же, как и жизни цветов; day — день, days — дни; дни жизни, жизнь). And as for my soul (а что касается моей души), what doth my soul profit me (какая мне от нее польза/выгода; doth = does), if it stand between me and the thing that I love (если она стоит между мной и той: «тем созданием», которую я люблю)?'
