"Here is my lens (лупа). You know my methods. What can you gather yourself as to the individuality of the man (относительно индивидуальности человека) who has worn this article (который носил эту вещь; to wear — носить, надевать)?"
I took the tattered object (я взял рваную вещь) in my hands and turned it over rather ruefully (перевернул = повертел в руках довольно уныло). It was a very ordinary black hat (самая обыкновенная черная шляпа) of the usual round shape (обычной круглой формы), hard and much the worse for wear (жесткая и сильно поношенная: «ставшая намного хуже из-за ношения»). The lining had been of red silk (подкладка была красного шелка), but was a good deal discolored (значительно выцветшая). There was no maker's name (не было имени изготовителя); but, as Holmes had remarked, the initials "H. B." were scrawled upon one side (были небрежно написаны на одной стороне). It was pierced in the brim for a hat-securer (была проколота на полях для придерживавшей шляпу резинки; to secure — страховать; прикреплять), but the elastic was missing (но резинка отсутствовала). "Then, pray tell me what it is that you can infer from this hat?"
