He held the small table sideways to the electric light
“I was hoping that if the paper (я надеялся, что если бумага) on which he wrote was thin (на которой он писал, была тонкой), some trace of it might come through upon this polished surface (следы написанного могли проступить на = текст мог остаться на этой полированной поверхности; to come through — проникать, просачиваться, проходить через). No, I see nothing (нет, ничего не видно). I don’t think there is anything more to be learned here (не думаю, что здесь можно узнать еще что-нибудь). Now for the central table (теперь /займемся/ центральным столом). This small pellet is, I presume (этот

“Watson, I have always done you an injustice. There are others. What could this NN be? It is at the end of a word. You are aware that Johann Faber is the most common maker’s name. Is it not clear that there is just as much of the pencil left as usually follows the Johann?”

“I was hoping that if the paper on which he wrote was thin, some trace of it might come through upon this polished surface. No, I see nothing. I don’t think there is anything more to be learned here. Now for the central table. This small pellet is, I presume, the black, doughy mass you spoke of. Roughly pyramidal in shape and hollowed out, I perceive. As you say, there appear to be grains of sawdust in it. Dear me, this is very interesting. And the cut — a positive tear, I see. It began with a thin scratch and ended in a jagged hole. I am much indebted to you for directing my attention to this case, Mr. Soames. Where does that door lead to?”
“To my bedroom (в мою спальню).”
“Have you been in it since your adventure (вы были в ней после того события)?”
“No, I came straight away for you (нет, я тотчас отправился к вам).”
“I should like to have a glance round (я хотел бы взглянуть /на спальню/). What a charming, old-fashioned room (какая милая старомодная комната; charming — очаровательный, прелестный)! Perhaps you will kindly wait a minute (быть может, вы любезно подождете минуту = будьте любезны, подождите немного), until I have examined the floor (пока я осмотрю пол). No, I see nothing (нет, ничего не вижу). What about this curtain (а что это за занавеска; what about — как насчет?)? You hang your clothes behind it (вы вешаете за ней одежду). If anyone were forced to conceal himself in this room he must do it there (если бы кто-нибудь был вынужден спрятаться в этой комнате, он сделал бы это здесь; to conceal — скрывать, прятать), since the bed is too low (поскольку кровать слишком низкая) and the wardrobe too shallow (а гардероб узкий; shallow — мелкий, неглубокий). No one there, I suppose (полагаю, здесь никого нет)?”
As Holmes drew the curtain I was aware (когда Холмс отдергивал занавеску, я понял; to draw), from some little rigidity and alertness of his attitude (по

As Holmes drew the curtain I was aware, from some little rigidity and alertness of his attitude, that he was prepared for an emergency. As a matter of fact, the drawn curtain disclosed nothing but three or four suits of clothes hanging from a line of pegs. Holmes turned away, and stooped suddenly to the floor.
“Halloa! What’s this (эй, а это что)?” said he.
It was a small pyramid of black, putty-like stuff (это была маленькая пирамидка из черного, похожего на замазку вещества), exactly like the one upon the table of the study (точно такая, как /пирамидка/ на столе в кабинете). Holmes held it out on his open palm in the glare of the electric light
“Your visitor seems to have left traces in your bedroom (по-видимому, ваш гость оставил следы в спальне) as well as in your sitting-room, Mr. Soames (так же, как и в гостиной, мистер Сомс).”
“What could he have wanted there (что ему могло понадобиться здесь)?”
“I think it is clear enough (думаю, это вполне очевидно). You came back by an unexpected way (вы вернулись с неожиданной стороны), and so he had no warning (поэтому он вас не слышал; warning — предупреждение; предостережение) until you were at the very door (пока вы не оказались у самой двери). What could he do (что он мог сделать)? He caught up everything which would betray him (он схватил все, что выдало бы его; to catch), and he rushed into your bedroom to conceal himself (и бросился в вашу спальню, чтобы спрятаться).”

“Good gracious, Mr. Holmes, do you mean to tell me (Боже мой, мистер Холмс, вы хотите сказать; good gracious — Господи!, Боже мой! /восклицание, выражающее удивление, досаду и т. п./; gracious — милосердный, милостивый; любезный) that, all the time I was talking to Bannister in this room (что все время, пока я разговаривал с Бэннистером в этой комнате), we had the man prisoner (негодяй был у нас в плену) if we had only known it (если бы мы только знали об этом)?”
