Dear me, this is very interesting (ну и ну, очень интересно). And the cut — a positive tear, I see (а порез /на столе/ — прямо-таки прореха; to tear — рвать/ся/, разрывать/ся/; tear — дыра, прореха). It began with a thin scratch and ended in a jagged hole (началась тонкой царапиной, а кончилась дырой с рваными краями; jagged — зазубренный, с рваными краями). As Holmes drew the curtain I was aware (когда Холмс отдергивал занавеску, я понял; to draw), from some little rigidity and alertness of his attitude (по
