Шрифт:
The king lifted his spear, and suddenly twenty thousand feet were raised, as though they belonged to one man, and brought down with a stamp upon the earth. This was repeated three times, causing the solid ground to shake and tremble. Then from a far point of the circle a solitary voice began a wailing song, of which the refrain ran something as follows:
"What is the lot of man born of woman?"
Back came the answer rolling out from every throat in that vast company:
"Death!"
Gradually, however, the song was taken up by company after company (постепенно, однако, песня была подхвачена, /ее подхватывал/ отряд за отрядом; to take up —принять, подхватить), till the whole armed multitude were singing it (пока, наконец, ее не запела вся масса вооруженных людей; multitude —
gradually ['grxdjuqlI], armed [Q:md], phase [feIz], love-song ['lAvsON], chant [CQ:nt], dirge [dq:dZ], heartbreaking ['hQ:t"breIkIN], bloodcurdling ['blAd"kq:dlIN]
Gradually, however, the song was taken up by company after company, till the whole armed multitude were singing it, and I could no longer follow the words, except in so far as they appeared to represent various phases of human passions, fears, and joys. Now it seemed to be a love-song, now a majestic swelling war-chant, and. last of all a death-dirge, ending suddenly in one heartbreaking wail that went echoing and rolling away in a volume of bloodcurdling sound.
Again the silence fell upon the place (снова на площадь опустилась тишина), and again it was broken by the king lifting up his hand (и снова она была прервана королем, который поднял руку; to break — ломать, разбивать/на части/; нарушать). Instantly there was a pattering of feet (тут же /послышалось/ топанье ног; to patter — барабанить, стучать/о дожде и т.п./; топотать, шлепать), and from out of the masses of the warriors strange and awful figures came running towards us (и из масс воинов выбежали странные и ужасные фигуры, которые двигались в нашем направлении; towards — к, по направлению к). As they drew near we saw that they were those of women (когда они приблизились, мы увидели, что это были женщины: «это были фигуры женщин»), most of them aged (большинство из которых были старыми; aged — пожилой, в возрасте), for their white hair, ornamented with small bladders taken from fish, streamed out behind them (и их седые волосы, украшенные маленькими рыбьими пузырями: «пузырями, взятыми у рыб», развевались у них за спинами: «позади них»; white — белый; седой; to stream — течь, вытекать/струей, потоком/; развеваться). Their faces were painted in stripes of white and yellow (их лица были раскрашены белыми и желтыми полосами; paint — рисование; краска, окраска; to paint — писать красками; красить, покрывать краской); down their backs hung snakeskins (по их спинам свисали змеиные шкуры; snake skin — кожа змеи, змеиная кожа), and round their waists rattled circlets of human bones (а на их талиях погромыхивали ожерелья из человеческих костей; to rattle — трещать, грохотать; дребезжать, сильно стучать), while each held in her shrivelled hand a small forked wand (и каждая /из них/ держала в своей иссохшей руке небольшой раздвоенный жезл; fork — вилка; развилина, разветвление; forked — раздвоенный, разветвленный; wand — тонкая палочка; волшебная палочка, жезл). In all there were ten of them (всего их было десять).
patter ['pxtq], awful ['O:ful], ornament ['O:nqment], bladder ['blxdq], snakeskin ['sneIk"skIn], circlet ['sq:klIt]
Again the silence fell upon the place, and again it was broken by the king lifting up his hand. Instantly there was a pattering of feet, and from out of the masses of the warriors strange and awful figures came running towards us. As they drew near we saw that they were those of women, most of them aged, for their white hair, ornamented with small bladders taken from fish, streamed out behind them. Their faces were painted in stripes of white and yellow; down their backs hung snake skins, and round their waists rattled circlets of human bones, while each held in her shrivelled hand a small forked wand. In all there were ten of them.
When they arrived in front of us they halted (когда
"Mother, old mother, we are here (мать, старая мать, мы здесь)."
"Good (хорошо)! good! good!" piped out that aged iniquity (пропищало это престарелое /воплощение/ порока; to pipe — играть насвирели или дудке; пищать, жужжать; iniquity — беззаконие, зло, несправедливость). "Are your eyes keen, Isanusis" (witch doctresses) (зорки ли ваши глаза, изануси (охотницы за ведьмами); keen — острый; тонкий, острый/слух, зрение и т.п./), "ye seers in dark places (вы, кто видит в темных местах; seer — тот, ктовидит)?"
"Mother, they are keen (они зорки, мать)!"
"Good! good! good! Are your ears open, Isanusis (открыты ли ваши уши, Изануси), ye who hear words that come not from the tongue (вы, кто слышит слова, которые исходят не только с языка)?"
"Mother, they are open (они открыты, мать)."
wand [wOnd], iniquity [I'nIkwItI], seer [sIq], tongue [tAN]
When they arrived in front of us they halted, and one of them, pointing with her wand towards the crouching figure of Gagool, cried out:
"Mother, old mother, we are here."
"Good! good! good!" piped out that aged iniquity. "Are your eyes keen, Isanusis"(witch doctresses), "ye seers in dark places?"
"Mother, they are keen!"
"Good! good! good! Are your ears open, Isanusis, ye who hear words that come not from the tongue?"
"Mother, they are open."
"Good! good! good! Are your senses awake, Isanusis (бодрствуют ли ваши чувства; awake — не спящий, проснувшийся; бдительный, настороженный) — can ye smell blood (можете ли вы почувствовать запах крови; smell — обоняние; запах, аромат), can ye purge the land of the wicked ones (можете ли вы очистить землю от нечистых; wicked — злой, безнравственный; грешный, нечистый) who compass evil against the king and against their neighbors (которые замышляют зло против короля и своих соседей; to compass — окружать; замышлять, затевать)? Are ye ready to do the justice of `Heaven above' (вы готовы свершить правосудие "небес над нами"; justice — справедливость; правосудие), ye whom I have taught (вы, кого я сама научила), who have eaten of the bread of my wisdom (вы, которые ели хлеб моей мудрости) and drunk of the water of my magic (и пили воду моего волшебства)?"
"Mother, we can (мать, мы можем)."
"Then go (тогда идите)! Tarry not, ye vultures (не мешкайте, вы хищницы; vulture — гриф /птица/); see the slayers (посмотрите на убийц)" — pointing to the ominous group of executioners behind (указывая на зловещую группу палачей позади /себя/) — "make sharp their spears (заострите их копья); the white men from afar are hungry to see (белые люди /прибывшие/ издалека жаждут увидеть; hunger — голод; жажда, сильное желание; to hunger — голодать; жаждать, сильно желать). Go (идите)."
