The king lifted his spear, and suddenly twenty thousand feet were raised, as though they belonged to one man, and brought down with a stamp upon the earth. This was repeated three times, causing the solid ground to shake and tremble. Then from a far point of the circle a solitary voice began a wailing song, of which the refrain ran something as follows:

"What is the lot of man born of woman?"

Back came the answer rolling out from every throat in that vast company:

"Death!"

Gradually, however, the song was taken up by company after company (постепенно, однако, песня была подхвачена, /ее подхватывал/ отряд за отрядом; to take up —принять, подхватить), till the whole armed multitude were singing it (пока, наконец, ее не запела вся масса вооруженных людей; multitude —

"Are your eyes keen, Isanusis" (witch doctresses) (зорки ли ваши глаза, изануси (охотницы за ведьмами); keen — острый; тонкий, острый/слух, зрение и т.п./), "ye seers in dark places (вы, кто видит в темных местах; seer — тот, ктовидит)?"

"Mother, they are keen (они зорки, мать)!"

"Good! good! good! Are your ears open, Isanusis (открыты ли ваши уши, Изануси), ye who hear words that come not from the tongue (вы, кто слышит слова, которые исходят не только с языка)?"

"Mother, they are open (они открыты, мать)."

When they arrived in front of us they halted, and one of them, pointing with her wand towards the crouching figure of Gagool, cried out:

"Mother, old mother, we are here."

"Good! good! good!" piped out that aged iniquity. "Are your eyes keen, Isanusis"(witch doctresses), "ye seers in dark places?"

"Mother, they are keen!"

"Good! good! good! Are your ears open, Isanusis, ye who hear words that come not from the tongue?"

"Mother, they are open."

"Good! good! good! Are your senses awake, Isanusis (бодрствуют ли ваши чувства; awake — не спящий, проснувшийся; бдительный, настороженный) — can ye smell blood (можете ли вы почувствовать запах крови; smell — обоняние; запах, аромат), can ye purge the land of the wicked ones (можете ли вы очистить землю от нечистых; wicked — злой, безнравственный; грешный, нечистый) who compass evil against the king and against their neighbors (которые замышляют зло против короля и своих соседей; to compass — окружать; замышлять, затевать)? Are ye ready to do the justice of `Heaven above' (вы готовы свершить правосудие "небес над нами"; justice — справедливость; правосудие), ye whom I have taught (вы, кого я сама научила), who have eaten of the bread of my wisdom (вы, которые ели хлеб моей мудрости) and drunk of the water of my magic (и пили воду моего волшебства)?"

"Mother, we can (мать, мы можем)."

"Then go (тогда идите)! Tarry not, ye vultures (не мешкайте, вы хищницы; vulture — гриф /птица/); see the slayers (посмотрите на убийц)" — pointing to the ominous group of executioners behind (указывая на зловещую группу палачей позади /себя/) — "make sharp their spears (заострите их копья); the white men from afar are hungry to see (белые люди /прибывшие/ издалека жаждут увидеть; hunger — голод; жажда, сильное желание; to hunger — голодать; жаждать, сильно желать). Go (идите)."
