"Sit down, for Heaven's sake," I whispered; "our lives depend on it."

He yielded and remained quiet. Twala sat still until the traces of the tragedy had been removed, then he addressed us.

"White people," he said, "who come hither, whence I know not, and why I know not, greeting."

"Greeting, Twala, king of the Kukuanas," I answered.

"White people, whence come ye, and what seek ye?"

"We come from the stars, ask us not how. We come to see this land."

"Ye come from far to see a little thing. And that man with ye," pointing to Umbopa, "does he too come from the stars?"

"Even so; there are people of thy color in the heavens above; but ask not of matters too high for thee, Twala, the king."

"Ye speak with a loud voice, people of the stars (вы

говорите смело: «громким голосом», люди со звезд; loud — громкий, звучный; развязный/о манерах/)," Twala answered, in a tone which I scarcely liked (ответил Твала таким тоном, который мне совсем не понравился: «который едва ли мне понравился»). I laughed out loud, though there was little laughter in my heart (я громко рассмеялся, хотя в глубине души у меня было немного смеха = мне было не до смеха; laughter — смех, хохот; heart— сердце; душа, сердце; in one’s heart— в глубине души).

"O king (о, король)," I said, "be careful (будь осторожен); walk warily over hot stones, lest thou shouldst burn thy feet (осторожно ступай по горячим камням, чтобы не обжечь ноги); hold the spear by the handle, lest thou shouldst cut thy hands (держи копье за древко, чтобы не порезать руки). Touch but one hair of our heads (тронь хоть волосок на наших головах), and destruction shall come upon thee (и тебя ждет гибель; destruction— разрушение, уничтожение; умерщвление, лишение жизни; to come upon— натолкнуться на что-либо; охватывать кого-либо , случаться с кем-либо). What, have not these (как, разве эти /двое/)," pointing to Infadoos and Scragga (/сказал я/, указывая на Инфадуса и Скраггу) (who, young villain that he was, was employed in cleaning the blood of the soldier off his spear (который, вот молодой злодей, был занят тем, что счищал кровь /убитого им/ солдата со своего копья)), "told thee what manner of men we are (не рассказали тебе, что мы за люди; manner— способ, метод; архаич. род, сорт)? Hast thou ever seen the like of us (видел ли ты кого-либо, похожего на нас; the likes of us— такие люди, как мы)?" and I pointed to Good (и я показал на Гуда), feeling quite sure that he had never seen anybody before (чувствуя себя вполне уверенным, что тот никогда не видел никого прежде) who looked in the least like him as he then appeared (кто бы выглядел, во всяком случае, так, как он выглядел в тот момент; to appear— показываться; появляться; выглядеть, иметь вид).

Kill me a man among those who stand yonder (убей для меня какого-нибудь человека среди тех, кто стоит вон там)" — and he pointed to the opposite side of the kraal (и он указал на противоположную сторону крааля) — "and I will believe (и тогда я поверю)."

"Nay," I answered; "we shed no blood of man except in just punishment; but if thou wilt see, bid thy servants drive in an ox through the kraal gates, and before he has run twenty paces I will strike him dead."

"Nay," laughed the king (рассмеялся король), "kill me a man, and I will believe (убей для меня человека, и тогда я поверю)."

On hearing this suggestion Scragga gave a sort of howl (услышав такое предложение, Скрагга взвизгнул; howl — вой, завывание; крик, вопль), and bolted into the hut (и бросился в хижину; to bolt — запирать на засов; убегать, удирать).
