Then the gigantic figure slipped off the karross and stood up before us, a truly alarming spectacle. It was that of an enormous man with the most entirely repulsive countenance we had ever beheld. The lips were as thick as a negro's, the nose was flat, it had but one gleaming black eye (for the other was represented by a hollow in the face), and its whole expression was cruel and sensual to a degree.

From the large head rose a magnificent plume of white ostrich feathers (над его большой головой поднимался великолепный султан

Round the neck was a thick torque of gold (вокруг шеи было толстое крученное ожерелье из золота; torque — /археол./крученое металлическое ожерелье, браслет/было распространено у бриттовигаллов/), and bound on to the forehead was a single and enormous uncut diamond (а на /повязке на/ лбу /мерцал/ один, огромных размеров, необработанный бриллиант; to bind — вязать, связывать, повязывать; uncut — не разрезанный; не шлифованный, не граненый).

(и из восьми тысяч глоток раздалось королевское приветствие: "Кум!"; to ring out— прозвучать, раздаться). Three times this was repeated (оно было повторено три раза), and each time the earth shook with the noise (и каждый раз земля сотрясалась от грохота), that can only be compared to the deepest notes of thunder (который можно было бы сравнить только с самыми глухими раскатами грома; deep— глубокий; низкий, глухой /о звуке/; note— тон, звук).

"It is the king (это король)," boomed out eight thousand throats, in answer (пророкотали восемь тысяч глоток в ответ; to boom — гудеть, рокотать). "Be humble, O people; it is the king (будьте покорны, о люди; это король)."

Then there was silence again — dead silence (затем снова наступила тишина — полнейшая тишина). Presently, however, it was broken (вскоре, однако, она была нарушена). A soldier on our left dropped his shield (один воин, стоявший слева от нас, уронил свой щит), which fell with a clatter on the limestone flooring (который с грохотом упал на известняковый пол; clatter — стук, звон; лязг, громыхание/пустой посуды, машин и т.д./).

Twala turned his one cold eye in the direction of the noise (Твала обратил свой единственный равнодушный глаз в направлении этого шума = в том направлении, откуда раздался грохот; to turn— поворачивать; направлять, обращать; cold— холодный; холодный, неприветливый, равнодушный).

And then we saw the poor fellow turn pale under his dusky skin (и затем мы увидели, как бедняга побледнел, несмотря на свою смуглую кожу: «под своей смуглой кожей»; to turn — поворачивать; становиться, делаться; pale — бледный, мертвенно-бледный; dusky — темный, темноватый; смуглый).

"I am the king's ox (я всего лишь бык короля)," was the low answer (последовал тихий ответ; low— низкий, невысокий; тихий, негромкий /о звуке/).
