"Come hither, thou," he said, in a voice of thunder.

A fine young man stepped out of the ranks, and stood before him.

"It was thy shield that fell, thou awkward dog. Wilt thou make me a reproach in the eyes of strangers from the stars? What hast thou to say?"

And then we saw the poor fellow turn pale under his dusky skin.

"It was by chance, O calf of the black cow," he murmured.

"Then it is a chance for which thou must pay. Thou hast made me foolish; prepare for death."

"I am the king's ox," was the low answer.

"Scragga," roared the king (прорычал король; to roar — реветь, орать, рычать), "let me see how thou canst use thy spear (дай

мне взглянуть, как ты можешь владеть своим копьем; thou canst = you can). Kill me this awkward dog (убей-ка мне этого неуклюжего пса)."

Scragga stepped forward with an ill-favored grin (Скрагга сделал шаг вперед с отвратительной ухмылкой; ill-favored — некрасивый; отвратительный), and lifted his spear (и поднял свое копье). The poor victim covered his eyes with his hand and stood still (бедная жертва закрыла глаза рукой и стояла неподвижно; to cover — накрывать, закрывать, покрывать). "Greeting, Twala, king of the Kukuanas (приветствуем /тебя/ Твала, король кукуанов)," I answered.

"White people, whence come ye, and what seek ye (белые люди, откуда вы прибыли и что вы ищите)?"

"We come from the stars, ask us not how (мы прибыли со звезд, не спрашивай нас как). We come to see this land (мы прибыли, чтобы посмотреть на эту землю)."
