knee [ni:], stagger ['stxgq], yard [jQ:d], distress [dIs'tres]
The figure crept along on its hands and knees, then it got up and staggered along a few yards on its legs, only to fall and crawl along again. Seeing that it must be somebody in distress, I sent one of my hunters to help him, and presently he arrived, and who do you suppose it turned out to be?"
"José Silvestre, of course," said Captain Good.
"Yes, José Silvestre, or rather his skeleton and a little skin (да, Жузе Силвештра, или, точнее, его кожа да кости: «его скелет и немного кожи»). His face was bright yellow with bilious fever (его

"Yes, José Silvestre, or rather his skeleton and a little skin. His face was bright yellow With bilious fever, and his large, dark eyes stood nearly out of his head, for all his flesh had gone. There was nothing but yellow, parchment-like skin, white hair, and the gaunt bones sticking up beneath.
"'Water! for the sake of Christ, water (воды, ради Христа, воды)!' he moaned (простонал он). I saw that his lips were cracked (я видел, что его губы потрескались; to crack — производишь шум, треск; трескаться), and his tongue, which protruded between them, was swollen and blackish (а язык распух и почернел: «и его язык, который торчал между ними, был распухшим и черноватым»; to protrude — высовываться; выдаваться, торчать).
"I gave him water with a little milk in it (я дал ему воды, /в которую подмешал/ немного молока: «с небольшим /количеством/ молока в ней»), and he drank it in great gulps (и он выпил ее большими глотками; gulp— глотание, заглатывание; большой глоток), two quarts or more, without stopping (/целых/ две кварты или /даже/ больше, одним залпом: «без остановки»; quart— кварта /единица измерения объема жидкости; равняется 1/4 галлона = 2 пинтам= 1,14 лв Англии; 0,95 лв Америке/). I would not let him have any more (я не позволил ему выпить больше; to have— иметь; принимать пищу, есть, пить). Then the fever took him again (затем у него снова началась лихорадка), and he fell down and began to rave about Suliman's Mountains (он упал и начал бредить о Сулеймановых горах), and the diamonds (и о бриллиантах), and the desert (и о пустыне).

I took him into the tent and did what I could for him, which was little enough (я взял = отвел его в /свою/ палатку и сделал для него все, что мог, хотя я не мог сделать многого: «что было совсем немного»); but I saw how it must end (но я понимал, чем все это должно было закончиться). I took him into the tent and did what I could for him, which was little enough; but I saw how it must end. About eleven o'clock he got quieter, and I lay down for a little rest and went to sleep. At dawn I woke again, and saw him in the half light sitting up, a strange, gaunt form, and gazing out towards the desert. Presently the first ray of the sun shot right across the wide plain before us till it reached the faraway crest of one of the tallest of the Suliman Mountains, more than a hundred miles away.
"'There it is (вот она)" cried the dying man in Portuguese (воскликнул умирающий /мужчина/ по-португальски), stretching out his long, thin arm (протягивая свою длинную худую руку), `but I shall never reach it, never (но я никогда не доберусь до нее, никогда). "Suddenly he paused, and seemed to take a resolution (внезапно он замолчал, и казалось, принял какое-то решение; topause— делать паузу, перерыв; resolution— решительность, решимость; решение, твердое намерение). `Friend (друг),' he said, turning towards me (сказал он, поворачиваясь ко мне), `are you there (вы здесь)? "Yes," I said, "yes, lie down now, and rest (да = я здесь, теперь ложитесь и отдохните)."

"'Ay,' he answered, `I shall rest soon (вскоре я отдохну;to rest — отдыхать, давать отдых; покоиться, лежать/вчастности, в могиле/); I have time to rest — all eternity (у меня есть время для отдыха — вся вечность).
