"It seems that we are in a paradise of game. I vote we stop here a day or two, and have a go at them," said Sir Henry, presently.

I was rather surprised, for hitherto Sir Henry had always been for pushing on as fast as possible, more especially since we had ascertained at Inyati that about two years ago an Englishman of the name of Neville had sold his wagon there, and gone on up country; but I suppose his hunter instincts had got the better of him.

Good jumped at the idea (Гуд ухватился за эту мысль; to jump — прыгать, скакать; to jump at smth. — охотно принимать что-либо, ухватиться за что-либо), for he was longing to have a go at those elephants (потому что ему ужасно хотелось поохотиться на слонов; to long —

And this was what it was (и вот чем была эта /масса/). On the grass there lay a sable antelope bull (на траве лежал самец черной антилопы; bull — бык; самец крупного животного/кита, слона и т.п./) — the most beautiful of all the African antelopes (самой красивой из всех африканских антилоп) — quite dead (/совершенно/ мертвый), and transfixed by its great curved horns was a magnificent black-maned lion, also dead (и, пронзенный его большими изогнутыми рогами, лежал великолепный лев с черной гривой, также мертвый; to transfix — пронзать, прокалывать, протыкать/чем-либо острым/; mane — грива).

And this was what it was. On the grass there lay a sable antelope bull — the most beautiful of all the African antelopes — quite dead, and transfixed by its great curved horns was a magnificent black-maned lion, also dead.

What had happened, evidently, was this (вот что, очевидно, произошло). The sable antelope had come down to drink at the pool (/самец/ черной антилопы спустился к пруду напиться), where the lion — no doubt the same we had heard — had been lying in wait (где лев, несомненно тот же самый лев, которого мы слышали, подкарауливал /его/; wait — ожидание; засада; to lie in wait — быть в засаде). I once saw the same thing happen before (я однажды видел нечто подобное и раньше: «как то же самое случилось раньше»). The lion, unable to free himself, had torn and beaten at the back and neck of the bull (лев, который не мог освободиться, рвал и бил самца антилопы в спину и шею; to tear— рвать, разрывать; to beat— бить, колотить), which, maddened with fear and pain, had rushed on till it dropped dead (который, доведенный до бешенства страхом и болью, несся до тех пор, пока не пал мертвым; mad— сумасшедший, ненормальный; обезумевший, рассвирепевший; to madden— сводить с ума; доводить до бешенства).
