The man’s defense was that “the lady” (as he called her) was an English stranger (его оправдание

I accepted his proposal (я принял его предложение).

That day the surgeon dined with us (в тот день доктор обедал с нами). Toward midnight he and I left the smoking room (к полуночи мы с ним вышли из курительной комнаты; to smoke – курить), and repaired to Francis Raven’s bedside (и направились к постели Фрэнсиса Рейвена; to repair – направляться; собираться /где-л./; ремонтировать). Rigobert was at his post, with no very agreeable expression on his face (Ригобер был на посту, с не очень приятным выражением на лице). “My good fellow (дорогой мой: «мой хороший парень»)! she couldn’t find you in England (она не смогла тебя найти в Англии). How in the world is she to find you in France (как, скажи на милость, она может найти тебя во Франции; in the world – /для усиления/ очень, вообще, же: «в мире»)?”

“It’s borne in on my mind, sir, that she will find me here (мне стало ясно, сэр, что она найдет меня здесь; to be borne in on smb. – становиться ясным, понятным кому-л.; to bear – /пере/носить, /пере/возить; питать /чувства/; держать /в голове, памяти/). At two in the morning on my birthday I shall see her again (в два часа утра, в день моего рождения я снова увижу ее), and see her for the last time (и увижу в последний раз).”

 “I have come, Francis, to bid you good night,” I said, cheerfully. “Tomorrow morning I shall look in at breakfast time, before I leave home on a journey.”

“Thank you for all your kindness, sir. You will not see me alive tomorrow morning. She will find me this time. Mark my words – she will find me this time.”

“My good fellow! she couldn’t find you in England. How in the world is she to find you in France?”

“It’s borne in on my mind, sir, that she will find me here. At two in the morning on my birthday I shall see her again, and see her for the last time.”

“Do you mean that she will kill you (ты хочешь сказать, что она убьет тебя)?”

“I mean that, sir, she will kill me – with the knife (да, я хочу сказать, сэр, что она убьет меня тем ножом).”

“And with Rigobert in the room to protect you (при том, что Ригобер будет в комнате, чтобы тебя защищать; to protect – защищать; охранять)?”
