In the first place, having got possession of the knife (во-первых: «на первом месте», завладев ножом), I was rash enough to keep it in my pocket (я довольно опрометчиво хранил/носил его в кармане; rash – поспешный; опрометчивый, безрассудный). I got there safely enough (я добрался туда вполне благополучно; safely – благополучно; безопасно; надежно).

 Placed in this awkward position, my first duty was to set things right, with the help of my lawyer. During my forced sojourn in the town I did two foolish things. And, as a consequence that followed, I heard once more, and heard for the last time, of my wife.

In the first place, having got possession of the knife, I was rash enough to keep it in my pocket. In the second place, having something of importance to say to my lawyer, at a late hour of the evening, I went to his house after dark – alone and on foot. I got there safely enough.

Returning, I was seized on from behind by two men (возвращаясь,

я был схвачен сзади двумя мужчинами), dragged down a passage and robbed (втащен в переулок и ограблен; passage – проход, переход; коридор) – not only of the little money I had about me, but also of the knife (/они взяли/ не только немного денег, которые у меня были с собой, но и нож). It was the lawyer’s opinion (as it was mine) (мнение адвоката – как и мое – было таково) that the thieves were among the disreputable acquaintances formed by my wife (что эти воры были из числа сомнительных знакомых моей жены; thief – вор), and that they had attacked me at her instigation (и что они напали на меня по ее наущению; instigation – подстрекательство; наущение). To confirm this view I received a letter the next day (чтобы подтвердить = в подтверждение этого мнения я получил письмо на следующий день), without date or address (без даты и адреса), written in Alicia’s hand (написанное рукой Алисии; hand – кисть; почерк). The first line informed me (первая строка сообщала мне; line – линия; строка) that the knife was back again in her possession (что нож снова в ее владении). The second line reminded me of the day when I struck her (вторая строка напоминала мне о том дне, когда я ее ударил; to strike).

 Returning, I was seized on from behind by two men, dragged down a passage and robbed – not only of the little money I had about me, but also of the knife. It was the lawyer’s opinion (as it was mine) that the thieves were among the disreputable acquaintances formed by my wife, and that they had attacked me at her instigation. To confirm this view I received a letter the next day, without date or address, written in Alicia’s hand. The first line informed me that the knife was back again in her possession. The second line reminded me of the day when I struck her.

The third line warned me that she would wash out the stain of that blow in my blood (третья предупреждала меня, что она смоет пятно того удара моей кровью; to wash – мыть; стирать; отстирать/ся/, отмывать/ся/; stain – пятно; позорящий факт, пятно), and repeated the words, “I shall do it with the knife (и повторяла слова: «Я сделаю это вот этим ножом»)!”

These things happened a year ago (эти события произошли год назад). The law laid hands on the men who had robbed me (полиция арестовала тех людей, которые меня ограбили; law – закон; the law – /разг./ полиция; to lay hands on – найти, приобрести /что-л./; заполучить, прибрать к рукам /кого-л., что-л./; схватить, изловить /кого-л./: «положить руки на»); but from that time to this (но

с того времени до этого /дня/), the law has failed completely to find a trace of my wife (полиция так и не смогла найти ни следа моей жены; to fail – потерпеть неудачу; не суметь /сделать что-л./).

My story is told (моя история рассказана). When I had paid the creditors and paid the legal expenses (когда я расплатился с кредиторами и оплатил судебные издержки; expense – расход, издержка, трата), I had barely five pounds left out of the sale of my house (у меня осталось едва ли пять фунтов с продажи дома; barely – едва, с трудом); and I had the world to begin over again (а мне нужно было снова начинать новую жизнь; world – свет, мир; жизнь /человека/; to begin the world – вступать в жизнь; начинать новую жизнь).

 The third line warned me that she would wash out the stain of that blow in my blood, and repeated the words, “I shall do it with the knife!”

Some months since – drifting here and there (несколько месяцев назад – помотавшись там и сям; to drift – относить или гнать /ветром, течением/; дрейфовать; плыть по течению) – I found my way to Underbridge (я попал: «нашел свой путь» в Андербридж). The landlord of the inn had known something of my father’s family in times past (хозяин гостиницы знал немного семью отца в былые времена/в прошлом; something – кое-что, что-то; немного, в некоторой степени). He gave me (all he had to give) my food (он дал мне все, что мог дать – пищу), and shelter in the yard (и приют во дворе).

In the coming winter the inn is to be shut up (будущей зимой гостиницу закроют; coming – приближающийся, наступающий, будущий), and I shall have to shift for myself (и мне придется самому о себе заботиться; to shift for oneself – обходиться без посторонней помощи, действовать самостоятельно; to shift – перемещать/ся/; переезжать /куда-л./; обходиться, перебиваться). My old master would help me if I applied to him (мой старый хозяин помог бы мне, если бы я попросил его; to apply – обращаться с просьбой; просить /о чем-л./) – but I don’t like to apply (но я не хочу просить): he has done more for me already than I deserve (он уже сделал для меня больше, чем я заслуживаю). Besides, in another year who knows but my troubles may all be at an end (кроме того, кто знает, может, в следующем году все мои тревоги закончатся; another – еще один, другой /такой же/; новый; to be at an end – кончиться, прийти к концу)?

 Some months since – drifting here and there – I found my way to Underbridge. The landlord of the inn had known something of my father’s family in times past. He gave me (all he had to give) my food, and shelter in the yard.
