“And you wanted somebody to sit up with you (но ты хотел, чтобы кто-то подежурил около тебя)?”

“Mere weakness, sir (/это/ всего лишь слабость, сэр). I don’t like to be left alone on my deathbed (я не хочу быть оставленным в одиночестве на смертном одре).”

 “Do you mean that she will kill you?”

“I mean that, sir, she will kill me – with the knife.”

“And with Rigobert in the room to protect you?”

“I am a doomed man. Fifty Rigoberts couldn’t protect me.”

“And you wanted somebody to sit up with you?”

“Mere weakness, sir. I don’t like to be left alone on my deathbed.”

I looked at the surgeon (я

If he had encouraged me, I should certainly, out of sheer compassion (если бы он поддержал меня, я бы, несомненно, из одного лишь сочувствия; to encourage – ободрять; поощрять, поддерживать /в чем-л./; sheer – настоящий, сущий; единственный, исключительный), have confessed to Francis Raven the trick that we were playing him (признался Фрэнсису Рейвену, что мы над ним подшучиваем; trick – обман; шутка, шалость; to play a trick on smb. – сыграть шутку с кем-л., подшутить над кем-л.). The surgeon held to his experiment (доктор придерживался эксперимента); the surgeon’s face plainly said – “No” (его лицо ясно говорило «нет»).

The next day (the twenty-ninth of February) was the day of the “Silver Wedding” (следующий день – двадцать девятое февраля – был днем серебряной свадьбы). The first thing in the morning, I went to Francis Raven’s room (первым делом с утра я пошел в комнату к Фрэнсису Рейвену). Rigobert met me at the door (Ригобер встретил меня у двери).

“How has he passed the night?” I asked (как он провел ночь? – спросил я).

 I looked at the surgeon. If he had encouraged me, I should certainly, out of sheer compassion, have confessed to Francis Raven the trick that we were playing him. The surgeon held to his experiment; the surgeon’s face plainly said – “No.”

“Saying his prayers, and looking for ghosts,” Rigobert answered (читал молитвы и ждал привидений, – ответил Ригобер; to look for – искать; ожидать). “A lunatic asylum is the only proper place for him (сумасшедший дом – самое подходящее место для него; lunatic – сумасшедший, безумный; asylum – убежище, пристанище; приют /благотворит. учреждение, особ. для психически больных/; only – единственный; наиболее подходящий).”

I approached the bedside (я подошел к постели). “Well, Francis, here you are, safe and sound (ну вот, Фрэнсис, ты цел и невредим/жив и здоров), in spite of what you said to me last night (несмотря

на то, что ты говорил мне вчера ночью).”

His eyes rested on mine with a vacant, wondering look (его глаза – с отсутствующим, недоумевающим выражением – остановились на моих; to wonder – удивляться; задаваться вопросом).

“I don’t understand it (я этого не понимаю),” he said.

“Did you see anything of your wife when the clock struck two (тебе удалось увидеть свою жену, когда часы пробили два; anything – что-нибудь; сколько-нибудь; в какой-либо мере)?”

 “Saying his prayers, and looking for ghosts,” Rigobert answered. “A lunatic asylum is the only proper place for him.”

I approached the bedside. “Well, Francis, here you are, safe and sound, in spite of what you said to me last night.”

His eyes rested on mine with a vacant, wondering look.

“I don’t understand it,” he said.

“Did you see anything of your wife when the clock struck two?”

“No, sir (нет, сэр).”

“Did anything happen (что-нибудь произошло)?”

“Nothing happened, sir (ничего не произошло, сэр).”

“Doesn’t this satisfy you that you were wrong (разве это не убеждает тебя в том, что ты ошибался; to satisfy – удовлетворять; убеждать, доказывать)?”

His eyes still kept their vacant, wondering look (его глаза все еще сохраняли свое отсутствующее, недоумевающее выражение). He only repeated the words he had spoken already (он только повторил слова, которые только что произнес): “I don’t understand it (я этого не понимаю).”

 “No, sir.”

“Did anything happen?”

“Nothing happened, sir.”

“Doesn’t this satisfy you that you were wrong?”

His eyes still kept their vacant, wondering look. He only repeated the words he had spoken already: “I don’t understand it.”

I made a last attempt to cheer him (я сделал последнюю попытку подбодрить его; to cheer – веселить; ободрять, утешать). “Come, come, Francis (ну, ну, Фрэнсис)! keep a good heart (не падай духом/не унывай: «сохраняй хорошее сердце»). You will be out of bed in a fortnight (ты встанешь с постели = поднимешься на ноги через две недели; fortnight – две недели).”
