"I hope so," I answered, and turned to go back to the camp, when I saw that we were not alone. Behind us, also gazing earnestly towards the far-off mountains, was the great Zulu, Umbopa.

"Is it to that land that thou wouldst journey, `Incubu?" (a native word meaning, I believe, an elephant, and the name given to Sir Henry by the Kaffirs) he said, pointing towards the mountains with his broad assegai.

I asked him sharply what he meant by addressing his master in that familiar way (я резко спросил его, почему он обращается к своему господину в такой фамильярной манере: «что он хотел сказать своим обращением к своему господину…»; to mean— намереваться, иметь в виду; думать, подразумевать). The man laughed a quiet little laugh which angered me (зулус: «мужчина» рассмеялся спокойным смехом, который разозлил меня).

I asked him sharply what he meant by addressing his master in that familiar way. It is very well for natives to have a name for one among themselves, but it is not decent that they should call one by their heathenish appellations to one's face. The man laughed a quiet little laugh which angered me.

"How dost thou know that I am not the equal of the inkoosi I serve (откуда ты знаешь, что я не ровня инкоози /вождю/, которому я служу; equal — равный; ровня)?" he said. I was angry with the man (я был рассержен на него), for I am not accustomed to be talked to in that way by Kaffirs (потому что я не привык, чтобы кафры разговаривали

I was angry with the man, for I am not accustomed to be talked to in that way by Kaffirs but somehow he impressed me, and besides I was curious to know what he had to say, so I translated, expressing my opinion at the same time that he was an impudent fellow, and that his swagger was outrageous.

"Yes, Umbopa," answered Sir Henry, "I would journey there (я отправляюсь туда)."

"The desert is wide and there is no water (пустыня широка, и в ней нет воды); the mountains are high and covered with snow (горы высоки и покрыты снегом), and man cannot say what is beyond them behind the place where the sun sets (и /ни один/ человек не может сказать, что находится за ними, за тем местом, где садится солнце; set — заход, закат/о небесных светилах/; to set — сажать, усаживать; садиться, заходить/о солнце, луне/); how shalt thou come thither, Incubu, and wherefore dost thou go (как ты придешь туда, Инкубу, и зачем ты идешь туда; wherefore — почему?, по какой причине?; с какой целью, для чего)?"

I translated again (я снова перевел).

"Tell him (скажи ему)," answered Sir Henry, "that I go because I believe that a man of my blood, my brother, has gone there before me (что я иду потому, что верю, что один человек одной со мной крови: «моей крови», мой брат, отправился туда до меня), and I go to seek him (и я иду, чтобы отыскать его)."

"Yes, Umbopa," answered Sir Henry, "I would journey there."

I translated again.

"Tell him," answered Sir Henry, "that I go because I believe that a man of my blood, my brother, has gone there before me, and I go to seek him."

"That is so, Incubu (так и есть, Инкубу); a man I met on the road told me (один человек, которого я встретил по дороге, рассказал мне) that a white man went out into the desert two years ago towards those mountains with one servant, a hunter (что белый человек ушел в эту пустыню два года назад, по направлению к тем горам, с одним слугой, охотником). They never came back (они так и не вернулись; never— никогда)."

"How do you know it was my brother (откуда ты знаешь, что это был мой брат)?" asked Sir Henry.

"Nay, I know not (нет, я этого не знаю).
