"Yet she knows much (и все же она многое знает)," I replied; "it is easier to destroy knowledge, Ignosi, than to gather it (проще уничтожить знания, Игнози, чем собрать их)."
"It is so (это так)," he said, thoughtfully (сказал он задумчиво). "She, and she only, knows the secret of the `Three Witches' yonder (она и только она знает секрет "Трех Колдунов" /сидящих/ вон там), whither the great road runs (куда ведет великая дорога), where the kings were buried (где были похоронены /наши/ короли), and the silent ones sit (и где сидят молчаливые)."

All was, he said, going on well; and he hoped to arrange a great feast in two weeks' time, in order to show himself to the people.
I asked him what he had settled to do with Gagool.
"She is the evil genius of the land," he answered, "and I shall kill her, and all the witch-doctors with her! She has lived so long that none can remember when she was not old, and always she it is who has trained the witch-hunters, and made the land evil in the sight of the heavens above."
"Yet she knows much," I replied; "it is easier to destroy knowledge, Ignosi, than to gather it."

After Ignosi's visit I went to see Good (после посещения Игнози я отправился взглянуть на Гуда), and found him quite delirious (и обнаружил его в сильном бреду; delirious — /находящийся/ в бреду). The fever from his wound seemed to have taken a firm hold of his system (лихорадка, /вызванная/ раной, казалось, /крепко/ охватила весь его организм; to take hold — хватать, схватить; охватывать, овладевать; system — система, способ; организм), and to be complicated by an internal injury (и была осложнена тем самым внутренним кровотечением: «ушибом внутренних органов»; to complicate — затруднять, осложнять). For four or five days his condition was most critical (четыре или пять дней его состояние было исключительно критическим; critical — разборчивый, требовательный; решающий, критический); indeed, I firmly believe that had it not been for Foulata's indefatigable nursing he must have died (на самом деле, я твердо уверен, что, если бы не неустанный уход Фоулаты, то он бы умер; fatigue — усталость, утомление; indefatigable — неутомимый, упорный; неослабный, беспрестанный; nurse — нянька, кормилица; сиделка, медицинская сестра; to nurse — кормить, выкармливать/ребенка/; ухаживать за больным, быть сиделкой). Women are women, all the world over, whatever their color (женщины остаются женщинами во всем мире, какого бы цвета /кожи/ они ни были).

Yet somehow it seemed curious to watch this dusky beauty (и все же казалось странным наблюдать, как эта смуглая красавица; dusky — сумеречный, темный; смуглый; dusk — сумерки; полумрак, сумрак) bending night and day over the fevered man's couch (склоняется денно и нощно над ложем охваченного лихорадкой мужчины), and performing all the merciful errands of the sick-room (и выполняет все милосердные поручения = обязанности комнаты больного = по уходу за больным) as swiftly, gently, and with as fine an instinct as a trained hospital nurse (так же проворно, нежно и с таким же прекрасным чутьем: «инстинктом», как и обученная больничная сестра). For the first night or two I tried to help her (в первую ночь или две я пытался помочь ей), and so did Sir Henry so soon as his stiffness allowed him to move (также поступал и сэр Генри, как только его состояние позволило ему двигаться; stiffness — мед. неподвижность, ригидность), but she bore our interference with impatience (но она сносила наши вмешательства с нетерпением), and finally insisted upon our leaving him to her (и наконец настояла на том, чтобы мы оставили его ей = поручили его ее заботам; to leave — уходить, уезжать; предоставить, поручить), saying that our movements made him restless, which I think was true (говоря, что наши движения беспокоили его: «делали его беспокойным», что, как мне кажется, было правдой).

medicine ['medsIn], infuse [In'fju:z], juice [dZu:s], emaciated [I'meISIeItId], luminous ['lu:mInqs], jabber ['dZxbq], compassion [kqm'pxS(q)n]
Day and night she watched and tended him, giving him his only medicine, a native cooling drink made of milk, in which was infused the juice of the bulb of a species of tulip, and keeping the flies from settling on him. I can see the whole picture now as it appeared night after night by the light of our primitive lamp, Good tossing to and fro, his features emaciated, his eyes shining large and luminous, and jabbering nonsense by the yard; and seated on the ground by his side, her back resting against the wall of the hut, the soft-eyed, shapely Kukuana beauty, her whole face, weary as it was, animated by a look of infinite compassion — or was it something more than compassion?
For two days we thought that he must die (два дня мы думали, что он умрет), and crept about with heavy hearts (и /медленно/ бродили /по краалю/ с тяжелыми сердцами).
Only Foulata would not believe it (только Фоулата не верила в это).
"He will live (он будет жить)," she said.
For three hundred yards or more around Twala's chief hut, where the sufferer lay, there was silence (на расстоянии трехсот или более ярдов вокруг главной хижины Твалы, где лежал раненый, стояла тишина; to suffer — страдать; sufferer — страдалец; пациент); for by the king's order all who lived in the habitations behind it had, except Sir Henry and myself, been removed (по приказу короля, все, кто жил в хижинах позади нее, за исключением сэра Генри и меня, были выселены; habitation — житье, проживание; жилище, дом; to remove — передвигать, перемещать; переезжать, изменять местожительства), lest any noise should come to the sick man's ear (чтобы никакой шум не долетал до ушей больного). One night, it was the fifth night of his illness, as was my habit (однажды ночью, а это была уже пятая ночь его болезни, я, по своему обыкновению) I went across to see how he was getting on before turning in for a few hours (пошел /через двор в его хижину/, чтобы взглянуть, как у него дела, прежде чем лечь на несколько часов поспать; to get on — делать успехи, преуспевать; поправляться; to turn in — /разг./ ложиться спать).
