"You may perhaps doubt our power to avenge," I went on, heedless of this by-play. "Stay, I will show you. Here, you dog and slave" (addressing Umbopa in a savage tone), "give me the magic tube that speaks;" and I tipped a wink towards my express rifle.

Umbopa rose to the occasion, and with something as nearly resembling a grin as I have ever seen on his dignified face, handed me the rifle.

"It is here, O lord of lords," he said, with a deep obeisance.

Now, just before I asked for the rifle I had perceived a little klipspringer[5] antelope (так вот, как раз перед тем, как я попросил /подать мне/ винтовку, я разглядел маленькую антилопу) standing on a mass of rock about seventy yards away (стоявшую на скале на расстоянии ярдов семидесяти /от нас/; mass — масса; куча, груда; mass of rock — каменнаяглыба, грудакамня), and determined to risk a shot at it (и принял решение рискнуть и выстрелить в нее).

"Ye see that buck (видите ли вы того самца /антилопы/)," I said, pointing the animal out to the party before me (сказал я, указывая на животное, /обращаясь/ к группе /мужчин, стоявших/ передо мной). "Tell me, is it possible for man, born of woman, to kill it from here with a noise (скажите мне, возможно ли человеку, рожденному женщиной, убить его отсюда при помощи шума)?"

"It is not possible, my lord (это невозможно, мой повелитель)," answered the old man (ответил старик).

"Yet shall I kill it (и все же, я убью его)," I said, quietly (сказал я спокойно).

The old man smiled (старик улыбнулся). "That my lord cannot do (это, мой повелитель, невозможно: «этого мой повелитель сделать не может»)," he said.

Now, just before I asked for the rifle I had perceived a little klipspringer antelope standing on a mass of rock about seventy yards away, and determined to risk a shot at it.

"Ye see that buck," I said, pointing the animal out to the party before me. "Tell me, is it possible for man, born of woman, to kill it from here with a noise?"

"It is not possible, my lord," answered the old man.

"Yet shall I kill it," I said, quietly.

The old man smiled. "That my lord cannot do," he said.

I raised the rifle, and covered the buck (я поднял винтовку и прицелился в самца). It was a small animal (это было некрупное животное), and one which one might well be excused for missing (и /стрелявшего/ вполне

A groan of terror burst from the group before us (стон ужаса вырвался у группы /мужчин, стоявших/ перед нами).

"If ye want meat (если вам нужно мясо)," I remarked, coolly (невозмутимо заметил я; coolly— свежо, прохладно; спокойно, хладнокровно), "go fetch that buck (то пойдите и принесите эту антилопу)."

There was no answer (ответа не последовало).

"If ye yet doubt our power (если вы все еще сомневаетесь в наших силах)," I went on, "let one of ye go stand upon that rock (пусть один из вас пойдет и встанет на той скале), that I may make him as this buck (чтобы я смог подстрелить его, как этого самца)."
